Propagation effects in few-mode fibers

2017 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2017
We review the main propagation effects that take place in fibers for Space-Division Multiplexing, focusing on their impact on system performance. We specifically address the interplay between modal dispersion (MD) and nonlinear distortions, and show that the increase in coherent MIMO-DSP complexity implied by MD is balanced by a MD-induced mitigation ...

Singlemode Soliton in Few-Mode Fiber

Advanced Photonics 2016 (IPR, NOMA, Sensors, Networks, SPPCom, SOF), 2016
We demonstrate that a 5-mode fiber is able to propagate strictly singlemode soliton. Single transverse mode behavior is evidenced by means of spectrally- and spatially-resolved imaging using the soliton itself as a broadband source.

Few-mode fiber transmission with in-line few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
We demonstrate wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) and mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission over a fiber recirculating loop comprising of a 25-km span of low differential mode group dispersion (DMGD) few-mode fiber carrying the LP01 and LP11 mode groups, and an inline few-mode erbium-doped fiber amplifier (FM-EDFA) providing low mode ...

Weakly-coupled Few-Mode Fibers and their Applications

2017 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC), 2017
We present design strategies for weakly-coupled few-mode fibers and their representative applications in passive optical networks, interconnects for datacenters and transmission of analog signals.

Fabrication of few-mode crystalline core fiber

2013 6th IEEE/International Conference on Advanced Infocomm Technology (ICAIT), 2013
A few-mode crystalline core fiber (FMCCF) cladded by high-index glass is demonstrated. The FMCCF consisted of 38-μm core with YAG single crystal and 260-μm cladding with N-SF57 high-index glass, which was fabricated by drawing-tower and laser-heated pedestal growth techniques. The FMCCF exhibited a V-value below four at 1400 nm to provide five few-mode

CapEx Advantages of Few-Mode Fiber Networks

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2015
CapEx minimization for few-mode fiber networks is studied for different traffic patterns for the first time. FMF networks can have significant CapEx advantages for bulk data transfer and for fine-granularity switching by deploying MDM-compatible WSSs.

Adaptive Mode Control in a Few-Mode Fiber

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2016
We experimentally demonstrated control of guided waves at two locations within a two-mode fiber by combining adaptive optics, mode-division-multiplexing, and time-division-multiplexing. The method can be generalized to mode control at multiple desired fiber network locations.

The Role of Anisotropy in Few-Mode Optical Fibers

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013
We analyze beating and coupling within LP(1,1) manifold, caused by fiber anisotropy. Results suggest that spinning the fiber may reduce modal dispersion as for nondegenerate LP(0,1) modes of nonideal fibers.

Rayleigh Backscattering in Few-Mode Optical Fibers

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2016
We measure inter-modal Rayleigh backscattering in few-mode optical fibers and compare the experimental results with simulation results obtained from newly-developed analytical formulae. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment allows investigation of mode-coupling dynamics using OTDR.

Analog Transmission over Few-Mode Fibers

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2016
Few-mode fibers can increase optical power throughput, arguably the most important parameter that determines the RF gain, noise figure and dynamic range of long-distance analog fiber-optic links.
