An Introduction to Radiation Effects on Optical Components and Fiber Optic Sensors

2007
We review the effects of ionizing radiation on various types of optical components including optical fiber sensors and summarize some of their applications in particular environments where the presence of energetic radiation is a concern.

Gamma radiation resistant Fabry–Perot fiber optic sensors

Review of Scientific Instruments, 2002
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1998 completed a study of emerging technologies that could be applicable to measurement systems in nuclear power plants [H. M. Hashemian et al., “Advanced Instrumentation and Maintenance Technologies for Nuclear Power Plants,” NUREG/CR-5501 (1998)].

Characterization of fiber optic Cerenkov radiation sensor for detecting neutrons

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
Cerenkov radiation can be observed easily as a shimmer of blue light from the water in boiling- and pressurized-water reactors, or spent fuel storage pools. In this research, we fabricated the fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor using a Gdfoil, rutile crystal and optical fiber for detecting neutrons.

Fiber Optic Sensors as Dosimeters for Ionizing Radiation

1987
The starting point of our investigations was the impact of ionizing radiation emerging from natural sources on fiber optic waveguides. Some of them showed a great sensitivity resulting in a darkening of the glass when exposed to ionizing radiation. The idea was to use this effect (unwanted in optical communication- systems) for a new type of radiation ...

Amplitude-time characteristics of a fiber optic ionizing radiation sensor

SPIE Proceedings, 1999
In work the formulas for calculation of the amplitude-time characteristics of a Cherenkov fiber-optic ionizing radiation sensor are given. The results of the mathematical modeling which has been carried out on these formulas, coincide qualitatively with experimental data.

Determination of the energy of ionizing radiation using fiber-optic sensors

12th International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors, 1997
During radiation therapy the dose distribution in the patients body depends on type and energy of the applied ionizing radiation. Therefore the determination of the energy or energy distribution of this radiation is important with regard to the quality assurance in radiation therapy. On the basis of an attenuation based fiber-optic dosimeter system for

Study of a compact radiation source for fiber-optic interferometric phase sensors

Journal of Optical Technology, 2015
This paper discusses the optical and electrical characteristics of the RayCan RC32 laser diode, with a vertical cavity that emits at a wavelength of 1550 nm, as a function of various operating regimes. The possibility of using laser diodes with a vertical cavity in fiber-optic interferometric phase sensors is considered.

Fabrication and optimization of a fiber-optic radiation sensor for proton beam dosimetry

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2011
Abstract In this study, we fabricated a fiber-optic radiation sensor for proton therapy dosimetry and measured the output and the peak-to-plateau ratio of scintillation light with various kinds of organic scintillators in order to select an organic scintillator appropriate for measuring the dose of a proton beam.

System-level radiation hardening of fiber-optic sensor for applications in the radiant condition

Optik, 2013
Abstract In order to improve the radiation hardness of fiber-optic sensor for applications in the radiant condition, especially in the condition that the commercial optical components are used, the system-level radiation hardening technique is proposed by taking into account fiber-optic Sagnac interferometer as an example, in this paper.
