Broadband Fiber Optic Amplifiers
Optical Fiber Communication Conference and International Conference on Quantum Information, 2001Broadband fiber optic amplifiers are key elements of DWDM systems and enablers for optical networks. New amplifier technologies for extending gain-bandwidth and equalizing the power deviation among WDM signals are discussed toward the next generation of ultra.-high-capacity DWDM systems.

Recent progress on an erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier (EDFA) pumped with a 0.98 micron laser diode is reported. An erbium-doped fiber with a very high gain coefficient of 11.0 dB/mW has been achieved using an extended VAD method. A high power 0.98 micron laser diode with a strained-layer InGaAs quantum well laser structure has been developed as ...

Integrated ytterbium-Raman fiber amplifier
Optics Letters, 2014An integrated ytterbium-Raman fiber amplifier architecture is proposed for power scaling of a Raman fiber laser. It is an ytterbium (Yb) fiber amplifier seeded with a double or multiple wavelength laser and followed by a passive Raman fiber. The bluest wavelength light gets amplified in the Yb fiber and the power is transferred to redder wavelengths in

Recently there has been a renewal of interest in the use of fibers doped with optically active ions, principally rare earths, as active devices in optical fiber communications and sensor systems. This increase in activity has been driven by improved methods for incorporating dopants into telecommunications-grade fiber, the availability of laser pumps ...

Summary form only given. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transport networks require amplifiers allowing large channel counts along with large span distances. This means that high gain (>25 dB) and large output power is required, along with low noise figure, in order to ensure high channel signal-to-noise ratio. Hence, for a 2.5-Gbit/s line-rate,

This study presents the principles behind a fiber parametric amplifier (FPA) operation. This includes the discussion of parametric amplification, four-wave mixing, phase conjugation, wavelength conversion, and optical regeneration due to gain saturation. FPA applications for quantum-optical systems and optical processing are also discussed.

Optical fiber amplifiers for telecommunication systems
IEEE Communications Magazine, 1996Optical amplification is of strategic importance for telecommunications. Optical amplifiers compensate for propagation losses in long distance links and branching losses in access networks, at the same time avoiding costly two-way conversions between optical and electrical signals.
