Examining the effect of temperature on steam oxidized silicon bond coats

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, EarlyView.
Abstract The SiO2 thermally grown oxide (TGO) is a life‐limiting factor for environmental barrier coatings (EBCs). EBCs in aeroengines face a variety of operating temperatures so the resulting effect on SiO2’s crystallinity and growth are necessary to better understand EBC failure.

Trans‐Oceanic Distributed Sensing of Tides Over Telecommunication Cable Between Portugal and Brazil

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 12, 28 June 2025.
Abstract Geophysical sensing in the open ocean is both costly and technically challenging. Here we developed a novel distributed fiber optic sensing technique that employs microwave modulation for phase measurement in signals returned from submarine repeaters.

Foams‐Induced Hierarchy for Multiscale Photonics on Flat Substrates: Lasing and Mie‐Bragg Diffraction as Case Studies.

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 11, June 9, 2025.
Ordered and disordered complex configurations displaying two levels of functionality can be fabricated using a simple self‐assembly method involving the foaming and casting of suspensions containing monodisperse spheres on unpatterned flat substrates.

Efficient, ultra-high attenuation fiber Bragg grating filter for photon noise suppression [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Precision optical filters are key components for current and future photonic technologies. Here, we demonstrate a low loss spectral filter consisting of an ultrasteep bandpass feature with a maximum gradient of (90.6$\pm$0.7) dB/GHz, centred within a notch filter with (128$\pm$6) dB of suppression.

Laser Terminals on CubeSats: Developments for Telecommunications and Quantum Links

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 43, Issue 3, Page 133-146, May/June 2025.
ABSTRACT Satellite‐based laser communication is an emerging technology that is finding its way from research to industry. Compared to radio frequency (RF) systems, it has a more efficient size, weight, and power budget and, furthermore, is license free.

Photonic Integrated Circuits for Optical Satellite Links: A Review of the Technology Status and Space Effects

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 43, Issue 3, Page 210-228, May/June 2025.
ABSTRACT Optical satellite communications provide high‐data rates with compact and power efficient payloads that can solve the bottlenecks of RF technologies. Photonic integrated circuits have the potential to reduce the cost, size, weight, and power consumption of satellite laser communications terminals, by integrating all the required photonic ...
