Design and Fabrication of Polymer-Fiber-based Luminescent Solar Concentrator Fabrics

We present the design and fabrication of all-polymer optical fiber luminescent solar concentrators. Large-area, lightweight, and flexible fabrics constructed of such fibers are a low-cost solar-energy alternative useful for mobile applications.

Design and fabrication of sol-gel microlens array as a fiber-to-fiber and fiber-to-waveguide coupler

This paper describes the design and fabrication of a microlens array in photosensitive hybrid sol-gel glass to enhance the coupling efficiency of fiber-to-fiber and fiber-to-waveguide systems. The Code V software is employed in the design and simulation of the microlens array with a theoretical coupling efficiency of as high as 0.18 dB (or 96%).

In this work we propose a new design of photonic crystal fiber with a side channel in the cladding region. The advantage of this fiber design is to provide easy access to the fiber core for applications requiring real-time measurement and longer interactions with light, such as microfluidic devices and solution-based optical sensors.

Level of emitted power and beam quality of singlemode fiber lasers have been drastically increased at the expense of loss due to bend sensitivity, simplicity of manufacturing and packaging. Design and fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating temperature sensor

A Bragg Grating Fiber temperature sensor with a grating period of 1550 nm was designed and fabricated. Excellent linearity was observed in the range -60 degrees Celsius to + 150 degrees Celsius between the shift in center wavelength and temperature. The grating was fabricated using a phase mask with its grating profile normal to the fiber axis.

Efficient fiber to chip couplers are essential for overall efficiency of integrated photonic devices. In this thesis new techniques are developed including using an optimization algorithm for designing adiabatic tapers and thinning of the waveguide over-cladding in the taper region.
