High-power fiber lasers: new developments [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2003
We assess different power limits of cladding-pumped fiber lasers. Despite recent advances in pump sources, these are still primarily limited by available pump power. We find that it should be possible to reach output powers beyond 1 kW in single-mode ytterbium doped fiber lasers.

Astronomical Applications of Multi-Core Fiber Technology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Optical fibers have altered astronomical instrument design by allowing for a complex, often large instrument to be mounted in a remote and stable location with respect to the telescope.

Subgenome Bias and Temporal Postponement of Gene Expression Contributes to the Distinctions of Fiber Quality in Gossypium Species

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2021
As two cultivated widely allotetraploid cotton species, although Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense evolved from the same ancestor, they differ in fiber quality; the molecular mechanism of that difference should be deeply studied.

Fiber Optic Sensors: Recent Developments

open access: yesAnalytical Letters, 1990
Abstract Biosensors are attracting the attention of many investigators in the field of biotechnology related research. A biosensor is a device that combines the specificity of a biomaterial (enzymes, antibodies, receptors or even whole cells) with sensitive, well established bioassays.

Study of quasi-distributed optical fiber methane sensors based on laser absorption spectrometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The coal industry plays an important role in the economic development of China. With the increase of coal mining year by year, coal mine accidents caused by gas explosion also occur frequently, which poses a serious threat to the life safety of ...

Enabling Efficient Mid‐Infrared Luminescence of Tm3+ in a Single Core–Shell Nanocrystal through Erbium Sublattice

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, 2023
Mid‐infrared luminescence at around 1.8 μm has shown great potential in many frontier photonic fields. However, how to realize the 1.8 μm emission of Tm3+ with multiple pump wavelengths and in particular in nanosized hosts has remained a challenge so far.

Dual functions of Expansin in cell wall extension and compression during cotton fiber development

open access: yesBiologia, 2020
Cotton fiber provides a distinct picture of cell wall synthesis. It is an epidermal single-cell extension of Cotton plant seed and undergoes three main stages of development, (1) initiation, (2) elongation and (3) maturation.

The Fiber Walk: A Model of Tip-Driven Growth with Lateral Expansion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Tip-driven growth processes underlie the development of many plants. To date, tip-driven growth processes have been modelled as an elongating path or series of segments without taking into account lateral expansion during elongation.

Developing Lignosulfonate-Based Activated Carbon Fibers [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials, 2018
In this study, electrospinning technology, physical activation, and carbonization processing were applied to produce lignosulfonate-based activated carbon fibers. The porous structure of the produced lignosulfonate-based activated carbon fibers primarily contained mesopores and a relatively small amount of micropores.

Nonlinear chirped pulse amplification for a 100-W-class GHz femtosecond all-fiber laser system at 1.5 $\unicode{x3bc}$ m

open access: yesHigh Power Laser Science and Engineering, 2023
In this work, we present a high-power, high-repetition-rate, all-fiber femtosecond laser system operating at 1.5 $\unicode{x3bc}$ m. This all-fiber laser system can deliver femtosecond pulses at a fundamental repetition rate of 10.6 GHz with an ...
