Mechanisms of Increasing Weld Depth during Temporal Power Modulation in High‐Power Laser Beam Welding

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Temporal power modulation increases weld depth in high‐power laser beam welding of dissimilar round bars by nearly 20% compared to same average continuously welded welding power. The mechanism of action also applies to sheet welding and depends on the inertia of keyhole depth for the modulated laser beam power.

A comparative study of an Yb-doped fiber gain-managed nonlinear amplifier seeded by femtosecond fiber lasers

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
In this work, we show that the nonlinear evolution of femtosecond seed pulses with different parameters (temporal and spectral shapes, repetition rate, pulse energy) in an Yb-fiber amplifier leads to gain-managed nonlinear amplification, enabling robust ...

A Novel Approach to Produce Metal–Metal Composites by Leveraging Immiscibility: Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Nanosilver‐Dispersed Titanium

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
Incorporating nanosized silver into titanium for antimicrobial materials exploits the metastable miscibility gap between silver and titanium. Silver nanoparticles are synthesized via pulsed laser ablation in liquid. Silver addition refines the microstructure, increases hardness by 30%, and reduces Staphylococcus capitis microbial adhesion by 70%, with ...

Fiber-Laser-Based Ultrasound Sensor for Photoacoustic Imaging

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Photoacoustic imaging, especially for intravascular and endoscopic applications, requires ultrasound probes with miniature size and high sensitivity. In this paper, we present a new photoacoustic sensor based on a small-sized fiber laser.

Multiple RF carrier distribution in a hybrid radio/fiber system employing a self-pulsating laser diode transmitter [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
A self-pulsating laser diode is used to generate a multicarrier microwave optical signal for use in a hybrid radio/fiber system. The self-pulsation frequency of the laser is controlled by external light injection, and can be varied between 14-24 GHz. The

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.

Nanoparticle‐Coated X2CrNiMo17‐12‐2 Powder for Additive Manufacturing – Part I: Surface, Flowability, and Optical Properties of SiC, Si, and Si3N4 Coated Metal Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
Herein, silicon‐based nanoparticle coatings on X2CrNiMo17‐12‐2 metal powder are presented. The coating process scale, process parameters, nanoparticle size (65–200 nm) as well as the coating amount are discussed regarding powder properties. The surface roughness affects the flowability, while reflectance depends on the coating material and surface ...
