Fiber lasers, a future technology for lasers in space [PDF]

open access: yes1998 IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.98TH8339), 2002
The constraints of operation in space have largely precluded the use of conventional solid-state laser systems for applications including remote sensing, communication relays and active laser radars. A new technology, fiber lasers, may offer all of the needed features at an affordable price.

Additive Manufacturing of Highly Alloyed Aluminum–Lithium

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
Al–Li alloys, promising for future lightweight constructions due to their low density and high stiffness, are limited to 9 at% lithium in commercial forms because of segregation issues. To overcome this traditional limitation, powder bed fusion with an ultrashort pulse laser is used.

Broadband THz Wave Generation and Detection in Organic Crystal PNPA at MHz Repetition Rates

open access: yesAdvanced Physics Research
Organic nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals have emerged as efficient room‐temperature emitters of broadband THz radiation with high electric field strengths. Although initially confined to high‐pulse‐energy excitation in the millijoule range with kHz rates,

Mechanical and Microstructural Effects of ZrO2 Nanoparticles in Fe20Cr Oxide Dispersion‐Strengthened Alloys Processed by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
The influence of oxide nanoparticle synthesis route and concentration on microstructure and high‐temperature performance of additively manufactured oxide dispersion‐strengthened steels is investigated. Comparing laser‐generated and chemically synthesized ZrO2 nanoparticles, the study reveals how dispersion quality, crystal structure and particle size ...

Development of Aluminum Scandium Alloys for Hydrogen Storage Valves

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Different aluminum alloy series and various aluminum‐scandium alloys with differing Sc and Zr levels are evaluated for use in hydrogen storage valve production. The alloys undergo hardness testing, optical microscopy, and tensile strength analysis, with hardening behavior studied under varying conditions.

70-fs mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with topological insulator

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2016
Femtosecond optical pulses have applications in optical communication, astronomical frequency combs and laser spectroscopy. Here, a hybrid mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser with topological insulator (TI) is proposed, for the first time to our ...

Pulse-to-pulse wavelength switchting of diode based fiber laser for multi-color multi-photon imaging

open access: yes, 2017
We present an entirely fiber based laser source for non-linear imaging with a novel approach for multi-color excitation. The high power output of an actively modulated and amplified picosecond fiber laser at 1064 nm is shifted to longer wavelengths by a ...

Preparation and Thermal Modification of Disentangled Ultrahigh‐Molecular‐Weight Polyethylene Particles for Powder‐Based Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 14, July 2025.
Ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene powders (<≈40 μm) with a bulk density of 260 g L−1 are prepared from a silica supported bisimine pyridine iron catalyst. The nascent product is disentangled and can be thermally densified without loss of its low viscosity.

Nanosecond passively Q-switched thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser based on black phosphorus nanoplatelets

open access: yes, 2016
The generation of nanosecond pulses in a thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser passively Q-switched by a black phosphorus saturable absorber (BP-SA) was experimentally demonstrated.

Combining Metal Additive Manufacturing and Casting Technology: High Performance Cooling Channels for Electric Powertrain Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
When realized as inserts in high‐pressure die casting, aluminum cooling channels for electric powertrain components and similar applications typically require a stabilizing filler to survive the process. The present study investigates relinquishing this filler using additively manufactured inserts promising performance improvements.
