Fundamentals of fiber laser remote welding and deep penetration welding

CLEO/Europe - EQEC 2009 - European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the European Quantum Electronics Conference, 2009
Remote/scanner welding and deep penetration welding with a fiber laser of high power and high beam quality is receiving a great attention since the laser can achieve high-speed welding and deep penetraion welding for mass production. However, welding phenomena are not fully understood.

Laser welding of fiber array units

Applied Optics
We report the results of fabricating fiber array unit (FAU) connectors using a near IR laser welding process, locking fibers in proper position on planar glass substrates and forming strong glass-to-glass bonds, followed by final assembly using lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) epoxies.

Humping in welding with single-mode fiber lasers

ICALEO 2006: 25th International Congress on Laser Materials Processing and Laser Microfabrication, 2006
The availability of lasers with highest beam quality at laser powers of 1 kW or more (such as single-mode fibre laser, which nowadays come close to the theoretical limits) provides a unique tool to investigate a wide range of welding process phenomena with penetrations of some 10 µm to penetrations of some mm.

Phenomena of welding with high-power fiber laser

ICALEO 2006: 25th International Congress on Laser Materials Processing and Laser Microfabrication, 2006
This study was performed with the objective of obtaining a fundamental knowledge of welding phenomena and mechanisms in producing deep and narrow weld beads in Type 304 stainless steel with a high-power fiber laser beam. Welding penetrations and defects were classified in weld beads made with the laser of about 115 and 360 Pm in beam diameter at the ...

Analysis on Fiber Laser Welding of MS1470 Steel

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
MS1470 steel is mainly used in the automotive industry, which has high strength, light weight and low cost. However, there always appear grains coarsening, brittle increasing, lower intensity and other issues. To solve this problem, we have analyzed the welding process, the fracture morphology and microstructure etc.

Laser beam welding aerospace aluminum using fiber lasers

SPIE Proceedings, 2008
This work intends to contribute towards the knowledge of AA6013 aluminum alloy weldability, autogenously welded with a high-power fiber laser. The quality and metallurgical characterization of the welds were done considering laser speed and power as process parameters.

New application possibilities for fiber laser welding

ICALEO 2007: 26th International Congress on Laser Materials Processing, Laser Microprocessing and Nanomanufacturing, 2007
Due to their unique design, fiber lasers offer new possibilities in the field of laser welding. Especially their higher focusability is known to allow narrow and deep welds which help to increase weld performance and reduce heat input. But, as such beam sources are not yet common in industrial environments, their possibilities and main application ...

Welding of dissimilar materials with 1kW fiber laser

ICALEO 2010: 29th International Congress on Laser Materials Processing, Laser Microprocessing and Nanomanufacturing, 2010
Majority of applications in a range of industries i.e. automotive, electronics, medical devices etc requires welding of dissimilar materials. In principle, a laser can weld any material, which can be joined by conventional processes. In the welding of dissimilar metals, good solid solubility is essential for sound weld properties. The trends of welding

Fiber laser hybrid welding of stainless steels

ICALEO 2008: 27th International Congress on Laser Materials Processing, Laser Microprocessing and Nanomanufacturing, 2008
Laser welding gives better penetration than conventional welding methods and can significantly increase the welding speed. Use of laser hybrid welding can further enhance the welding speed by improving gap bridgeability and allowing the addition of filler metal to facilitate welding of special grades.

Fiber Laser Welding of Noncombustible Magnesium Alloy

Materials Science Forum, 2008
Noncombustible magnesium alloy AMC602 (Mg-6mass%Al-2mass%Ca) extruded sheet of 2.0mm thickness was successfully welded using a fiber laser welding process at welding speed of 10m/min at 3kW laser power. Tensile strength of the welded joint was about 82 to 88% of that of the base metal.
