Novel nonlinear waves in optical fibers
Optics Letters, 1986It is shown that a new class of radially symmetric nonlinear waves exists in an optical fiber with a third-order, optical Kerr-effect nonlinearity. The fiber has a circular cross section, and the field solutions are obtained from a scalar-wave equation that excludes any azimuthal coordinate dependence. It is assumed that the fiber has a linear core and

Unification of nonlinear-optical fiber devices
Optics Letters, 1990Nonlinear coupling can be described in a universal form applicable to a general class of optical fiber devices involving the interaction of two modes. By knowing the solution to one type of device, we then have the solution to all other types. For example, the descriptions of birefringent fibers used as switches and amplifiers have their direct ...

This chapter describes light propagation in terms of modes of propagation that propagate through the optical fiber without any change in their transverse field distribution. Most fiber optic communication systems use digital communication in which information to be sent is first coded in the form of pulses and then these pulses of light are transmitted

Waveguides and fibers for nonlinear optics
Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1988Optical waveguides are ideal for nonlinear interactions because they provide strong beam confinement over long propagation distances. They are characterized by regions of high refractive index bounded by regions of lower refractive index. Examples of such waveguides are shown in Figure 1.

Bistable holes in nonlinear optical fibers
Optics Letters, 1989Bistable dark solitary-wave solutions (bistable holes) to the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation are shown to exist in the normal dispersion regime for nonlinearities that are Kerr-like at low intensities, rise sufficiently rapidly at intermediate intensities, and become Kerr-like again or approach a constant value at large intensities.

Nonlinear Optical Interactions in Optical Fibers
Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials, 1998We report on our research program aimed at clarifying the physical processes leading to the nonlinear optical response of silica optical fibers and at studying the implications of optical nonlinearities on optical pulse propagation and optical switching devices.

Polymer Optical Fibers and Nonlinear Optical Device Principles
Angewandte Chemie, 1989AbstractBasic principles of the present optoelectronic research activities at Hoechst AG are presented in this contribution. Within the diversified broad band spectrum of optoelectronic materials and applications our interest is focused on new types of polymer optical fibers and nonlinear optical device principles using organic Langmuir–Blodgett films ...

The use of fiber optics has tranformed telecommunications. In his Perspective, Mollenauer reviews some of the recent technical developments in this field that are based on the nonlinear properties of the fibers. Solitons (that is, light pulses that do not broaden as they travel) in silica fibers form the basis for the most sophisticated ...

Photonic crystal fibers for nonlinear fiber optics
Nonlinear Guided Waves and Their Applications, 2005Photonic crystal fibers are formed from two-dimensionally patterned glass, which can trap light in a single guided mode in a specially-designed core. Their unusual properties make them a rich source of nonlinear optical effects.

Optical fiber nonlinear soliton communication
Journal of Electronics (China), 1990In anormalous dispersion of monomode optical fiber, optical solitons are evolved from optical pulses when the dispersion is balanced by the nonlinearity. Undistorted transmission can be realized by using optical solitons, which can offer much greater the transmission capacity and extend the repeater spacing of the fiber communication system.
