Decentralized Fiber Optic Acquisition System
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1982The paper describes a decentralized data acquisition system installed for a long term on-site test at a French power plant. Two local autonomous stations acquire the information from 24 channels; the data are continuously transmitted to a concentrator through two 600 m long optical cables at a rate of 0.96 Mbits/sec.

Optical switch for multimode optical-fiber systems
Optics Letters, 1979A new type of optical switch is constructed of graded-index rod lenses. It is operated mechanically by small electromagnets. This switch is compatible with practical multimode-fiber communication systems. It has many outstanding features, such as low insertion loss (1.3–1.4 dB), low crosstalk ( 2 × 106 times), and small size (40 × 50 × 25 mm3).

One the greatest revolutions in data communications is the usage of light waves to transmit digital pulses through fiber optic cables. A light carrying system has an almost unlimited information capacity. Theoretically, it has more than 200 000 times the capacity of a satellite TV system.
