One the greatest revolutions in data communications is the usage of light waves to transmit digital pulses through fiber optic cables. A light carrying system has an almost unlimited information capacity. Theoretically, it has more than 200 000 times the capacity of a satellite TV system.

Fiber optic subscriber systems
IEEE LTS, 1992The introduction of fiber subscriber systems is assessed from the viewpoints of incentives for the network operator, merits for the users, and the expansion of the social infrastructure. The design of point-to-multipoint transmission system, which will be applied to fiber-to-the-home and fiber-to-the-floor systems, are presented.

Analog modulation appears attractive for fiber-optic transmission and distribution of single-channel and multichannel broadband and TV signals. While use of digital techniques is expected to grow beyond long-distance links, analog fiber systems are simple and compatible with existing distribution methods.
