Optical-fiber systems with nonreciprocal couplers
Optics Letters, 1987The effectively nonreciprocal behavior of a single-mode to multimode optical-fiber coupler is discussed and results from polished couplers given. Two different applications in local-area networks and recirculating rings are investigated and the results presented.

Micromechanical resonators in fiber-optic systems
Optics Letters, 1987A new fiber-optic system with which vibrations in a micromachined mechanical structure can be optically maintained and optically monitored is described. This system has achieved a signal-to-noise ratio of better than 19 dB with incoherent detection and an optical input of only 13 microW energizing the vibrations.

A fiber optic home automation system
IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics, 1993Guidelines have been provided for development of the fiber optic standard by the CEBus (consumer electronics bus), Fiber Optic Working Group. A system is presented which meets those guidelines yet represents a somewhat different approach than was envisioned by the Working Group.

Decentralized Fiber Optic Acquisition System
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 1982The paper describes a decentralized data acquisition system installed for a long term on-site test at a French power plant. Two local autonomous stations acquire the information from 24 channels; the data are continuously transmitted to a concentrator through two 600 m long optical cables at a rate of 0.96 Mbits/sec.

Optical fibers and amplifiers for WDM systems
Proceedings of the IEEE, 1997The development of optical-fiber amplifiers allowed a dramatic increase in the capacity of optical transmission systems while reducing system costs. Capacity increases are possible because the high output powers afforded by optical-fiber amplifiers support higher bit rates, while their broad bandwidth and slow gain dynamics allow multichannel operation.

Optimization Of Optical Coupling In Fiber-Optic Systems By Fiber Etching
SPIE Proceedings, 1990A method is described for optimizing the power coupling efficiency between a single fiber or bundle of fibers and either an optical component (such as a detector, coupler, splitter, etc.) or another fiber or fiber bundle. The technique described is to either (i) match the cross sectional areas of the components to be butt-coupled or (ii) decrease the ...

Joint Precoding for Optically Amplified Fiber-Optic Systems
2006 40th Annual Conference on Information Sciences and Systems, 2006Optically amplified regional and long-haul fiber optic networks employing wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) or code division multiple access (CDMA) are typically performance limited by cross-talk among different channels or users. Receiver based signal processing techniques for minimizing the resulting interference effects have been investigated ...

Polymer optical circuits for multimode optical fiber systems
Applied Optics, 1980Polymer optical waveguides for multimode optical fiber systems have been formed by the selective photopolymerization method, and their waveguiding properties have been investigated. It is shown that the polymer optical waveguides match multimode optical fiber systems, with respect to guide dimensions and index differences, and have a transmission loss ...
