Comparative analysis of the DFB fiber laser and fiber-optic interferometric strain sensors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The DFB fiber laser strain sensor is shown to provide an improvement in the minimum detectable length change by a factor of 275 at 2 kHz for an applied strain when compared with an interferometric sensor interrogated by at equivalent DFB laser.

Remote downconversion scheme for uplink configuration in radio/fiber systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The authors present a novel technology for uplink transmission in radio over fiber (RoF) distribution systems. The technique employs remote downconversion of the uplink data to intermediate frequency (IF) in the base station (BS).

Efficient large-scale multiplexing of fiber Bragg grating and fiber Fabry-Perot sensors for structural health monitoring applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Fiber Bragg gratings have been demonstrated as a versatile sensor for structural health monitoring. We present an efficient and cost effective multiplexing method for fiber Bragg grating and fiber Fabry-Perot sensors based on a broadband mode-locked ...

Mechanical strength of silica fiber splices after exposure to extreme temperatures [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
By using a combination of type-I and regenerated gratings, the mechanical strength of optical fiber splices after exposure to temperatures over 1300 C was characterized. Splice strength was found to decrease with temperature with a secondorder polynomial

Effects of Laser Beam Width on the Diameter and Molecular Weight of Laser-Electrospun Polylactide Fiber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Effects of spinning conditions (laser beam width, applied voltage, and laser power) on reduction of molecular weight by thermal degradation, fiber diameter, and its evenness were investigated for the laser‐heated electrospinning process of polylactide ...

High power, ultra-broadband supercontinuum source based on highly GeO2 doped silica fiber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We demonstrate a 74 mol % GeO2 doped fiber for mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. Experiments ensure a highest output power for a broadest spectrum from 700nm to 3200nm from this fiber, while being pumped by a broadband 4 stage Erbium fiber based ...

Potential Natural Fibrous Filter against PM2.5 from Juncus Effuses

open access: yesJournal of Natural Fibers, 2022
The internal morphology and micro-pore distribution of Juncus effuses (JE) plant fiber were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The porosity parameters and pore size characteristics of JE fiber were measured by a mercury intrusion meter.
