Multicore Fibers

open access: yesWorkshop on Specialty Optical Fibers and Their Applications, 2015
Recent advances in fiber technology enable the fabrication of multi-core fibers tailored for various applications. Examples of multi-core fibers for ultra-high-density spatial division multiplexing in communications and for high temperature sensor applications will be presented.

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Rotatable mass for a flywheel [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
An improved rotable mass for a flywheel characterized by a plurality of coaxially aligned, contiguous disks mounted on a spin shaft is presented. Each disk of the plurality is formed by a plurality of woven fibers disposed in a plane transversely related

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Glass fiber addition strengthens low-density ablative compositions [PDF]

open access: yes, 1974
Approximately 15% of E-glass fibers was added to compositions under test and greatly improved char stability. Use of these fibers also reduced thermal strains which, in turn, minimized char shrinkage and associated cracks, subsurface voids, and disbonds.

Riemannian submersions with discrete spectrum

open access: yes, 2010
We prove some estimates on the spectrum of the Laplacian of the total space of a Riemannian submersion in terms of the spectrum of the Laplacian of the base and the geometry of the fibers.

KLK7 overexpression promotes an aggressive phenotype and facilitates peritoneal dissemination in colorectal cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KLK7, a tissue kallikrein‐related peptidase, is elevated in advanced colorectal cancer and associated with shorter survival. High KLK7 levels in ascites correlate with peritoneal metastasis. In mice, KLK7 overexpression increases metastasis. In vitro, KLK7 enhances cancer cell proliferation, migration, adhesion, and spheroid formation, driving ...

Predicting Structural and Optical Properties of Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fibers from Second Stage Preforms

open access: yes, 2013
We propose a simple theory based on mass conservation that allows accurate prediction of guidance properties in hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers (HC-PBGF) from knowledge of the second stage preforms from which the fibers are ...
