Toward Fully Soft and Multifunctional Shape Sensing via Optical Waveguide Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work develops a sheet made with arrays of soft optical fibers that can reconstruct its 3D surface shape. Synergy of the waveguides’ responses to bending and pressing force allows shape reconstruction with resilience to damage. Applied onto surfaces of robotic or living systems, our design can be implemented in virtual reality, teleoperation ...

Bi-Signature optical spectroscopy for online fault detection in electrical machines

open access: yesThe Journal of Engineering, 2019
A novel bi-signature optical spectroscopy for fault detection in electrical machines is presented. The combined use of long period grating (LPG) and two fibre Bragg gratings (FBG1 and FBG2) is implemented to discriminate between vibration and temperature

Fabrication and applications of fibre Bragg gratings [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
The consequences of fabricating Bragg gratings in various fibres, with or without hydrogen loading, and with varying laser power levels are explored. Three new techniques for fabricating chirped gratings are presented. Beams with dissimilar wavefront curvatures are interfered to give chirped gratings. With the same aim techniques of writing gratings on

Fluorene‐based blue emitters: On the path to electrically pumped organic lasers

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Electrically pumped efficient operation remains unrealized, a major challenge in optoelectronics. Fluorene‐based blue‐emitting semiconductors are promising gain media, thanks to their structural tunability and favorable emission properties. This review summarizes recent advances, highlights their reliability and versatility in lasing, and outlines key ...

Small core FBG-based temperature compensated ‘smart’ contact lens for effective intraocular pressure measurement

open access: yesMeasurement: Sensors, 2019
In this work, a small core, Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG)-based smart contact lens for intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement has been demonstrated. Further, an integral temperature compensation mechanism has been developed and included in the sensor design,

Fibre Bragg grating strain sensors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The fabrication of in-fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) and their application as sensors is reported. The strain and temperature characteristic results for a number of chirped and uniform gratings written into three different host fibres are presented. The static and dynamic temperature response of a commercially available temperature compensated grating is ...

Stimulated Forward Brillouin Scattering in Subwavelength Grating Silicon Membranes

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
This work proposes a novel strategy to achieve large Brillouin scattering with independent control of the optical and mechanical modes using subwavelength silicon membranes. We experimentally demonstrate remarkably high Brillouin gain, resulting in an on/off Stokes gain of 3 dB and anti‐Stokes loss of 4 dB in a 6 mm‐long waveguide with 35 mW of on‐chip

1 W Single‐Mode Large‐Area Edge‐Emitting Laser via Non‐Hermitian Spatial Mode Filtering

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
We demonstrate a non‐Hermitian spatial mode filtering approach for achieving high‐power single‐mode operation in large‐area edge‐emitting laser diodes. By symmetrically coupling passive filter arrays to the main lasing waveguide, higher‐order transverse modes are effectively suppressed while preserving the fundamental mode.
