A review is given of the continuing rapid progress of optical fibre lasers in a number of directions, including visible upconversion lasers, high power (multiwatt) lasers, single frequency lasers and mode-locked lasers.

On fibred adjunctions and completeness for fibred categories
1994We show how the completeness and cocompleteness of the total category of a fibration can be inferred from that of the fibre categories and its base. Our results are somewhat stronger than those in [BGT91] and they are obtained as direct consequences of an important property of general fibred adjunctions.

Mammalian hair fibres can be structurally divided into three main components: a cuticle, cortex and sometimes a medulla. The cuticle consists of a thin layer of overlapping cells on the surface of the fibre, constituting around 10% of the total fibre weight.
