Ethnobotany of natural fibres - Bactris setosa (tucum) in a traditional rural community

open access: yes, 2012
This work aimed to study the characteristics of the fibres of the species Bactris setosa ('tucum') used by close-knit social groups, located in Sorocaba - Sao Paulo - Brazil, in basket-making techniques, for possible applications in textile activity ...

Atom guiding in free-space light beams and photonic crystal fibres [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this thesis I describe experimental work and present data on the guiding of Rubidium atoms along free-space propagating light beams as well as within hollow core glass fibres, namely photonic crystal fibres.

Effects of Mg on Microstructure and Solidification of a Hypereutectic Zn–8 wt.%Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An appreciable set of results involving thermal data, microstructure, chemical composition, and microstructural growth laws is reported for ZnAlMg alloys. Such results demonstrate that ZnAlMg alloys have high potential for applications in automotive self‐lubricating components, batteries, and electrical systems.

Enhancement of the Through‐Thickness Electrical Conductivity of Carbon‐Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Using Large Graphite Particles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
To enhance through‐thickness conductivity without sacrificing impregnation, large spherical graphite particles are intentionally employed in a low‐viscosity resin. Unlike finer conductive fillers, these particles remain outside the fiber bundles and accumulate in resin‐rich interlaminar regions during molding.

Elastic–Plastic Modeling and Experimental Characterization of Granular Jamming Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Granular jamming enables rapid switching between soft and rigid mechanical states. Here, a reduced‐order elastic‐perfectly‐plastic beam framework captures pressure‐dependent loading, unloading, residual deformation, and hysteresis in jammed beams, while matching three‐point bending experiments across materials and geometries. The framework links design

Mitigating Creep Anisotropy and Enhancing Performance in Additively Manufactured Ni‐Based Superalloys: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing introduces pronounced microstructural and crystallographic anisotropy in Ni‐based superalloys, resulting in orientation‐dependent creep deformation and damage. This review identifies the key microstructural origins of creep anisotropy, examines their influence on dominant deformation mechanisms, and highlights processing ...

Electrodeposition in Structural Lattices of Variable Architectures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Electrodeposition enables geometry‐sensitive, autonomous void filling while simultaneously tuning chemical and mechanical properties. The development of approaches that can autonomously fill and heal material voids and yield composites with tailorable properties is increasingly relevant in engineering.

Enhancing Low‐Temperature Performance of Sodium‐Ion Batteries via Anion‐Solvent Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DOL is introduced into electrolytes as a co‐solvent, increasing slat solubility, ion conductivity, and the de‐solvent process, and forming an anion‐rich solvent shell due to its high interaction with anion. With the above virtues, the batteries using this electrolyte exhibit excellent cycling stability at low temperatures. Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.
