Fibroblast growth factor 23 as a phosphotropic hormone and beyond
Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 2011Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is produced by bone and reduces serum phosphate by inhibiting proximal tubular phosphate reabsorption and intestinal phosphate absorption. Excess actions of FGF23 cause several kinds of hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia while deficient actions of FGF23 result in hyperphosphatemic tumoral calcinosis.

Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Phosphorus Metabolism
2011The understanding of phosphorus metabolism has expanded considerably over the last decade. Recent studies have identified a novel bone-kidney endocrine axis that maintains phosphate homeostasis. When phosphate is in excess, FGF-23 is secreted from bone and acts on the kidney to promote phosphate excretion into urine and to suppress vitamin D synthesis,

Fibroblast growth factor 23 in untreated nephrotic syndrome
Nephrology, 2018AbstractAimDespite its importance in bone and cardiovascular disease in subjects with kidney disease, there are no data on fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) perturbations in nephrotic syndrome. We evaluated FGF23 and markers of mineral bone metabolism in subjects with untreated NS.MethodsIn this crossâsectional study, we measured circulating levels ...

Phosphate wasting and fibroblast growth factor-23
Current Opinion in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Obesity, 2013The purpose of this study is to review the regulation of phosphate and recent progress in fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23), a key phosphate regulatory hormone.Phosphate is required for mineralization of bone, muscle strength and a host of biologic functions. Phosphate is sensed by bone that responds with secretion of FGF-23. The major action of FGF-

Fibroblast growth factor 23 and the future of phosphorus management
Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, 2009To present emerging data on the role of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) in mineral metabolism and adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD).FGF23 regulates phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism. Its levels increase progressively beginning in early CKD, presumably as a physiological adaptation to maintain normal serum phosphate levels or normal
