Cryptic Ice Wedge Networks in Holocene Peat, Yukon‐Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska

ABSTRACT The Yukon‐Kuskokwim Delta (YKD), covering ~75,000 km2 of Alaska's discontinuous permafrost zone, has a historic (1902–2023) mean annual air temperature of ~−1°C and was previously thought to lack ice wedge networks. However, our recent investigations near Bethel, Alaska, revealed numerous near‐surface ice wedges.

Prescribed burning effectively maintains threatened species in semi‐natural grasslands on lava flows

Prescribed burning shows promise for managing certain grassland types, but relying solely on it often reduces plant diversity, including threatened species. In Japanese dry grasslands established on volcanic ejecta, we explored conditions under which burning maintains high diversity.

Antbears and underground melons: A highly specialized seed dispersal mutualism mediated by scent

PLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Seed dispersal is critical for the establishment and persistence of populations of most plant species. We investigated the seed dispersal biology of an African melon, Cucumis humifructus, which is closely related to cultivated cucumbers and watermelons but differs in that it buries its fruits deep underground.
