Cells in the granular layer of mammalian epidermis contain densely staining bodies called keratohyalin granules. Two types of granules are identified. Larger ones contain phosphorus and consist largely of an unusually histidine rich protein. This protein has a high molecular weight and contains a large fraction of basic aminoacids.

Skin barrier dysfunction may precede infantile development of clinical atopic dermatitis (AD). Early‐life emollient therapy to enhance barrier function may prevent or modify AD development in high‐risk infants.

Detection of New Epitopes of Antibodies to Filaggrin in Filaggrin Protein Molecule
Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2011Immunogenic characteristics of filaggrin protein molecule as an antigen for antibodies to filaggrin, markers of early rheumatoid arthritis, were studied. Two new peptide motives, possible epitopes for antibodies to filaggrin, were shown in the filaggrin molecule by predictive analysis using programmed algorithms.

Filaggrin and Skin Barrier Function
2016The skin barrier function is greatly dependent on the structure and composition of the uppermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum (SC), which is made up of flattened anucleated cells surrounded by highly organized and continuous lipid matrix.

Palmar hyperlinearity is a typical clinical feature of Filaggrin gene (FLG) null mutations. There are reports of FLG mutations and allergic sensitization; however, reports on the relationship between palmar hyperlinearity to sensitization are limited ...

Keratin and filaggrin expression in keratoacanthoma
Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, 2007AbstractTo clarify the histogenesis of keratoacanthoma, we studied keratin (K) expression in keratoacanthoma (KA) using 10 different anti‐keratin antibodies against K1, K7, K8, K10, K14, K15, K16, K17, K18 and K19 and anti‐filaggrin (filament aggregating protein) antibody.

It has been shown in recent studies that a group of histidine-rich proteins play a significant role--as interfilamentous matrix proteins--in keratin formation in the epidermis of man and other species. These proteins have been termed filaggrins in reference to their ability to aggregate in vitro reconstituted keratin filaments to macrofibrils with a ...
