The Eye and Filaggrin

2014
The role of filaggrin in ophthalmology has only been investigated recently. This chapter provides an overview of the literature on this area and outlines the authors’ detection of filaggrin on parts of the eye that have not yet been analyzed for filaggrin: the lens, the retinal pigment epithelium, and the ciliary body.

Atopic Eczema and the Filaggrin Story

Seminars in Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, 2008
The discovery that null mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) are associated with atopic eczema represents the single most significant breakthrough in understanding the genetic basis of this complex disorder. The association has been replicated in multiple independent studies during the past 2 years with the use of various methodologies, from ...

Filaggrin in Psoriasis

2014
Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of multifactorial origin. A number of psoriasis susceptibility loci are known, and some are shared with susceptibility for atopic dermatitis. This has led to speculation that filaggrin gene (FLG) mutations and changes in filaggrin expression may also be associated with psoriasis.

Filaggrin in Canine Skin [PDF]

open access: possible, 2014
Filaggrin is an epidermal protein that contributes to the structure of the cornified envelope. Impaired filaggrin functions, either by filaggrin gene (FLG) mutation or by altered filaggrin expression, may lead to skin disease and enhance antigen penetration.

Filaggrin und Hautbarriere

Allergo Journal, 2009

Transient epidermal barrier deficiency and lowered allergic threshold in filaggrin‐hornerin (FlgHrnr−/−) double‐deficient mice

Allergy. European Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 2019
Filaggrin (Flg) and hornerin (Hrnr) share similar structural and functional features. Both proteins have been implicated as essential proteins for skin barrier maintenance.

Filaggrin and Skin Barrier Function

2016
The skin barrier function is greatly dependent on the structure and composition of the uppermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum (SC), which is made up of flattened anucleated cells surrounded by highly organized and continuous lipid matrix.

A randomized controlled trial of an emollient with ceramide and filaggrin‐associated amino acids for the primary prevention of atopic dermatitis in high‐risk infants

Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, 2019
Skin barrier dysfunction may precede infantile development of clinical atopic dermatitis (AD). Early‐life emollient therapy to enhance barrier function may prevent or modify AD development in high‐risk infants.

Filaggrin and the Oral Mucosa

2014
The stratified squamous epithelium of the oral mucosa is characterized by significant regional variations mainly with regard to differences in the degree of keratinization. The oral mucosa is also divided into lining, masticatory, and specialized types reflecting the functions in different areas.

Filaggrin gene mutations in hand eczema patients in the Indian subcontinent: A prospective case‐control study

Contact Dermatitis, 2019
There are no Indian studies on the association between filaggrin gene (FLG) mutations and any dermatosis, including hand eczema.
