Comparative Study on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Fusion Zones in X65/Ni825 Bimetallic Pipe Welds with Different Filler Metals

open access: yesMetals
X65/Ni825 bimetallic composite pipes combine the load-bearing capacity of pipeline steel with the corrosion resistance of nickel-based alloys, making them promising candidates for harsh oil and gas transportation environments.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Micro-Brazing of Stainless Steel Using Ni-P Alloy Plating

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
A Ni-P plated layer of 20 μm thickness containing 11 wt.% P was formed on the surface of a stainless steel (SUS304) plate by electroplating.

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Influence of Arc Brazing Parameters on Microstructure and Joint Properties of Electro-Galvanized Steel

open access: yesMetals, 2019
Arc brazing of zinc-coated steel (EG, Electro-galvanized steel) using Cu-3 wt%Si filler metal was performed. The influence of arc current and brazing speed on the bonding properties of the joint, such as bead characteristics, arc penetration, joint ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Failure analysis of fillet welds with premature corrosion in 316L stainless steel slide gates using constitution diagrams

open access: yesRevista UIS Ingenierías, 2020
The service environment of the slide gates may cause localized corrosion at welds.  In this work, a failure analysis was conducted to determine the causes of the premature corrosion of the fillet welds before the commissioning.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.
