Film Cooling Effectiveness for Short Film Cooling Holes Fed by a Narrow Plenum

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1999
The adiabatic, steady-state liquid crystal technique was used to measure surface adiabatic film cooling effectiveness values in the near-hole region X/D<10. A parametric study was conducted for a single row of short holes L/D⩽3 fed by a narrow plenum H/D=1.

Effects of chemical reaction caused by cooling stream on film cooling effectiveness

Journal of Thermal Science, 2012
With the increase of inlet temperature of gas turbines, the benefits by using the conventional methods are likely to approach their limits. Therefore, it is essential to study novel film cooling methods for surpassing these current limits. Based on the theory of heat transfer enhancement, a film cooling method with chemical reaction by cooling stream ...

The Effect of High Free-Stream Turbulence on Film Cooling Effectiveness

Journal of Turbomachinery, 1994
This study investigated the adiabatic wall cooling effectiveness of a single row of film cooling holes injecting into a turbulent flat plate boundary layer below a turbulent, zero pressure gradient free stream. Levels of free-stream turbulence (Tu) up to 17.4 percent were generated using a method that simulates conditions at a gas turbine combustor ...

Effect of Vortex Generators on Film Cooling Effectiveness

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2015
Film cooling is often adopted, where coolant jets are ejected to form a protective layer on the surface against the hot combustor gases. The bending of jets in crossflow results in counter rotating vortex pair (CRVP), which is a cause for high jet lift-off and poor film cooling effectiveness in the near field.

Effect of Stagnation Regions on Film Cooling Effectiveness

Volume 4: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007
Over the last decades, researchers have investigated many aspects of film cooling. The present study investigates the impact of stagnation region created by a downstream airfoil on endwall film cooling effectiveness. Experimental measurements are presented for a single row of cylindrical holes inclined at 35° with hole length to diameter ratio, L/D = 7.

Effect of Film Cooling Hole Area Ratio on Adiabatic Film Cooling Effectiveness Over a Flat Plate

ASME 2013 Gas Turbine India Conference, 2013
In the present study the film cooling performance is analyzed for a flat plate model with different hole area ratios. Here “Area Ratio” is defined as the ratio between the cross sectional area of the hole at inlet to the exit of the hole. The area ratios which are considered for analyzing are 1, 2 and 3.

Effect of Streamline Curvature on Film Cooling

Journal of Engineering for Power, 1977
The effects of streamline curvature on film cooling effectiveness are discussed. Experiments for air discharged through a slot and into a turbulent boundary layer along a flat, convex, and concave surface are described. Adiabatic wall effectiveness measurements on each surface for several blowing rates are presented.

Rotational effects on film cooling performance

International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow, 2012
PurposeNumerical simulations were carried out for two cooling schemes, a circular hole and a louver cooling scheme, at the leading edge of a rotor blade in a complete turbine stage.Design/methodology/approachTwo holes were positioned at the leading edge of a rotating blade, one on the pressure side and the other on the suction side. The methodology was

Effects of Jet Geometries on Film-cooling Effectiveness

2007
Numerical simulations based on control volume method and RNG k-e turbulence model were performed to investigate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the flat plate film cooling, squirting out from a cone-shaped jet orifice with a diffuser angle of γ to be 300 and a round-shaped jet orifice respectively.

Understanding the Effect of Trenching on Film Cooling

ASME/JSME 2007 Thermal Engineering Heat Transfer Summer Conference, Volume 3, 2007
Recently, there has been a strong focus on film cooling holes embedded in trenches. In this study, film cooling predictions are used to understand the mechanisms of the jets that exit these trenched holes. The present work employs RSM (Reynolds stress transport models) for simulation of turbulent flows in film cooling and the simulation was run using ...
