On the Film Cooling Effectiveness Controversy

Volume 1A: Gas Turbines, 1979
A relationship between isothermal and adiabatic film cooling effectiveness has been derived. Data from the open literature have been used to validate this relationship. This effectively uncouples short duration techniques from the concept of isothermal effectiveness.

The effect of unsteadiness on film cooling effectiveness

33rd Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 1995
Abstract : A unique feature of turbine rotor blade film cooling is the main flow unsteadiness caused by the upstream stator vanes. The combined effect of the vane inviscid flow field and the trailing edge wake results in a rapidly changing external pressure at the film cooled blade surface.

Convex Curvature Effects on Film Cooling Adiabatic Effectiveness

Volume 3B: Heat Transfer, 2013
Surface curvature is known to have significant effects on film cooling performance, with convex curvature inducing increased film effectiveness and concave curvature causing decreased film effectiveness. Generally, these curvature effects have been presumed to scale with 2r/d at the film cooling hole location, where r is the radius of curvature and d ...

Effect of Vortex Generators on Film Cooling Effectiveness

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2015
Film cooling is often adopted, where coolant jets are ejected to form a protective layer on the surface against the hot combustor gases. The bending of jets in crossflow results in counter rotating vortex pair (CRVP), which is a cause for high jet lift-off and poor film cooling effectiveness in the near field.

Heat Transfer Coefficient and Film Cooling Effectiveness on the Partial Cavity Tip of a Gas Turbine Blade

Journal of turbomachinery, 2018
Leakage flow between the rotating turbine blade tip and the fixed casing causes high heat loads and thermal stress on the tip and near the tip region. For this study, new squealer tips called partial cavity tips, which combine the advantages of plane and

Effect of Stagnation Regions on Film Cooling Effectiveness

Volume 4: Turbo Expo 2007, Parts A and B, 2007
Over the last decades, researchers have investigated many aspects of film cooling. The present study investigates the impact of stagnation region created by a downstream airfoil on endwall film cooling effectiveness. Experimental measurements are presented for a single row of cylindrical holes inclined at 35° with hole length to diameter ratio, L/D = 7.
