Effect of Canard Deflection for Roll Control on Fin Performance of a Fin-Stabilized Projectile

54th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2016
A study was undertaken to better understand the impact of canard trailing vortex flow interactions on the aerodynamics of short length-to-diameter, fin-stabilized munitions when canards are deflected to produce roll. Advanced computational aerodynamic techniques found that when the canards are deflected for roll control, significant rolling moments in ...

Active Fin Stabilizers

2013
The operating of a cargo or cruise ship are affected by the motions and forces due to rolling, which can cause ship/cargo damage and discomfort to the crew and passengers. In naval vessels, heavy rolling may affect the accuracy of the weapon system or prevent the landing or take off of helicopters or airplanes.

Dynamics of stabilizer fins on the waterjet-propelled ship

Ocean Engineering, 2021
Abstract An evaluation of the stabilizer fin's influence on the flow fields of a waterjet-propelled ship was studied by the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) method. Model- and full-scale simulations of the unsteady multiphase flow were carried out both in the bare hull and the self-propulsion conditions.

The study of flapped fin service system of main/flapped fin stabilizer

Proceedings of the 3rd World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation (Cat. No.00EX393), 2002
The paper studies the control law of flapped fin service system in the joint control system of main/flapped fin stabilizer. LQ inverse design based on pole placement method is used by means of state feedback inverse design. /spl Hscr//sup /spl infin// control theory is also adopted to design flapped fin service system.

Analysis of real time stabilization effect and parameter optimization of fin stabilizer

2012 IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation, 2012
The mathematic model of an actually installed fin stabilizer system is developed and simulation model of the system is built using MATLAB/Simulink. The power spectral analysis is performed and the real time stabilizing effect of the fin stabilizer is obtained by calculating the rolling motion of the ship both in conditions that with and without fin ...

Design of the roll stabilization controller, using fin stabilizers and pod propellers

Applied Ocean Research, 2011
Abstract Ships experience roll motion due to waves in a seaway. Therefore, fin stabilizers are installed to stabilize such roll motion. A fin stabilizer is effective at reducing the roll motion at moderate speeds but not at low speeds. Recently, pod propellers have been used with fin stabilizers for roll stabilization.

Modeling for active fin stabilizers at zero speed

Ocean Engineering, 2009
For roll stabilization of ships at zero speed, a kind of active fins based on the reaction force from the fluid is developed, and its working mechanism and mode are proposed after a detailed investigation on the morphology in the nature. A composite method of the analytical approach and numerical simulations with FLUENT is used to analyze the forces on

Computational Analysis of a Spinning Fin-Stabilized Projectile

30th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2012
A computational analysis was undertaken to better understand the behavior of a proposed sub-caliber fin-stabilized projectile prior to experimental testing at the request of GX3 Innovations, the projectile designer. The original configuration was found to meet drag requirements and was statically stable.

Fin stabilizer fault diagnostic expert system

1997 IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Processing Systems (Cat. No.97TH8335), 2002
A fin stabilizer fault diagnostic expert system is studied. A classification method, "Classification-Unification-Reclassification" is proposed. Based on the physical structure of the fin stabilizer and the total classification arrangement, a levelled fuzzy inference model and a fault diagnostic method are given for fin stabilizers.
