Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Phosphatase PTPN22 functions as an adaptor in the mTORC2 complex

open access: yesEMBO Reports
mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) kinase is a pivotal regulator of cellular growth and metabolism, integrating signals from nutrients and growth factors. It functions through the assembly of two distinct complexes, mTORC1 and mTORC2, which differ in

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...

Lessons Learned in Generating Ground Truth for Indoor Positioning Systems Based on Wi-Fi Fingerprinting

open access: yes, 2018
Publisher Copyright: © 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.Wi-Fi fingerprinting, a well-established indoor positioning technique, relies on a simple rule: the position attached to a fingerprint can be estimated from known positions of similar ...

Tuberculosis transmission attributable to close contacts and HIV status, Malawi. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We conducted the first molecular study of tuberculosis (TB) to estimate the role of household contact and transmission from HIV-positive putative source contacts (PSCs) in a high HIV-prevalence area.

Developing high-efficiency base editors by combining optimized synergistic core components with new types of nuclear localization signal peptide

open access: yesCrop Journal, 2020
The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)–CRISPR-associated protein (Cas) system has been widely used for genome editing. In this system, the cytosine base editor (CBE) and adenine base editor (ABE) allow generating precise ...

What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...

Only Pay for What You Leak: Leveraging Sandboxes for a Minimally Invasive Browser Fingerprinting Defense

open access: yes, 2023
We present Sandcastle, an entropy-based browser fingerprinting defense that aims to minimize its interference with legitimate web applications. Sandcastle allows developers to partition code that operates on identifiable information into sandboxes to ...

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Key Players in Plant Immunity Triggered by Diffusible Signal Factor (DSF), a Xanthomonas-Secreted Quorum-Sensing Molecule

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions
Plants are constantly exposed to diverse pathogens and have evolved sophisticated defense mechanisms to detect and respond to microbial threats. Pathogen recognition is often mediated by pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), such as cell wall ...
