Numerical Modeling of Tank Cars Carrying Hazardous Materials With and Without Composite Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Large‐scale puncture models consisting of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) tank car with protective steel–steel composite metal foam (S–S CMF) are solved numerically. Tank car plate with added 10.91–13.33 mm thick S–S CMF layer does not puncture. Protective S–S CMF absorbs impact energy, reduces plate deformation, and prevents shear bands formation ...

On Construction and Analysis of Finite Difference Schemes for Pseudoparabolic Problems with Nonlocal Boundary Conditions

open access: yesMathematical Modelling and Analysis, 2014
In this paper the one- and two-dimensional pseudoparabolic equations with nonlocal boundary conditions are approximated by the Euler finite difference scheme.

Rafting of Ni‐Based Superalloys Under Multiaxial Load as Understood by Phase‐Field Simulations and Critical Experiments

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Phase‐field simulations coupled with dislocation‐density‐based crystal plasticity modeling reproduce γ′ rafting behavior in single‐crystal Ni‐based superalloys under varied loading conditions. The model captures both macroscopic creep and microscopic morphology evolution, with results matching high‐temperature creep experiments.

Nonuniqueness of lattice Boltzmann schemes derived from finite difference methods

open access: yesExamples and Counterexamples
Recently, the construction of finite difference schemes from lattice Boltzmann schemes has been rigorously analyzed [Bellotti et al. (2022), Numer. Math. 152, pp. 1–40].

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

The finite difference scheme for mathematical modeling of wood drying process

open access: yesMathematical Modelling and Analysis, 2001
This work discusses issues on the design of finite difference schemes for modeling the moisture movement process in the wood. A new finite difference scheme is proposed.

Finite Difference Schemes for Poro-elastic ProblemS

open access: yesComputational Methods in Applied Mathematics, 2002
AbstractIn this paper, we present a finite difference analysis of the consolidation problem for saturated porous media. In the classical model, the behaviour of the porous environment – fluid system is described by a set of equations for the unknown vector displacements of the matrix skeleton and the fluid pressure.

Numerical Exploration of Thermal Shock Resistance in MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A mesostructure‐resolved numerical framework is developed to evaluate the thermal shock resistance of MgO–C refractories. By modeling interface debonding under rapid temperature changes and introducing a modified thermal shock parameter that accounts for mesocracks, the study shows how graphite content and aggregate size influence thermal shock ...

A Topology Optimization Framework for the Inverse Design of Nonlinear Mechanical Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work uses topology optimization to design unit cells for mechanical metamaterials with a prescribed nonlinear stress–strain response. The framework adds contact and postbuckling modeling to synthesize microstructures for three highly nonlinear responses, including pseudoductile behavior, monostable with snap‐through buckling, and bistable ...
