Finite element methods for director fields on flexible surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We introduce a nonlinear model for the evolution of biomembranes driven by the L-2-gradient flow of a novel elasticity functional describing the interaction of a director field on a membrane with its curvature.

Calculation of 3D transient Eddy current by the face-smoothed finite element–boundary element coupling method

open access: yesHigh Voltage, 2020
To calculate the distribution of the magnetic field and eddy current density on the surface of an aluminium plate, a method that couples the face-smoothed finite element method (FS-FEM) to the boundary element method (BEM) is proposed in this study. This

Embedded Ferroelectric Nanoclusters Can Drive Polarization Reversal in a Non‐Ferroelectric Polar Film via the Proximity Effect

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ferroelectric nanoclusters create local internal fields in a normally non‐switchable polar film because of polarization mismatch at their interfaces. That field opposes polarization in the regions with larger polarization and reinforces polarization in the regions with smaller polarization.

Nonconforming finite-element discretization of convex variational problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Lavrentiev gap phenomenon is a well-known effect in the calculus of variations, related to singularities of minimizers. In its presence, conforming finite-element methods are incapable of reaching the energy minimum.

Strong Lead‐Free Bioinspired Piezoceramics for Durable Energy Transducers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated brick‐and‐mortar lead‐free piezoceramics with Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 monocrystal platelets as bricks and amorphous silica as mortar. The alignment of the bricks and the presence of the amorphous silica led to anisotropic residual stresses. These residual stresses increase the samples toughness, strength and durability while the brick alignment ...

On the convergence of adaptive nonconforming finite element methods for a class of convex variational problems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We formulate and analyze an adaptive nonconforming finite element method for the solution of convex variational problems. The class of minimization problems we admit includes highly singular problems for which no Euler–Lagrange equation (or inequality ...

Application and Prospect of Wear Simulation Based on ABAQUS: A Review

open access: yesLubricants
The finite element method(FEM) is a powerful tool for studying friction and wear. Compared to experimental methods, it has outstanding advantages, such as saving financial costs and time. In addition, it has been widely used in friction and wear research.

Numerical calculation of acoustic radiation from band-vibrating structures via FEM/FAQP method

open access: yesZhongguo Jianchuan Yanjiu, 2017
The Finite Element Method (FEM) combined with the Frequency Averaged Quadratic Pressure method (FAQP) are used to calculate the acoustic radiation of structures excited in the frequency band.

Functionalizing Micro‐to‐Mesoscopic Electrode Architectures for Regulating Electron Transfer Behaviors in Electrocatalysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A systematic review is conducted to assess the influence of electrode architecture across micro‐ to mesoscopic length scales on electron‐transfer pathways in electrocatalysis. We discuss the structure‐activity relationships in electrocatalytic applications, including resource recovery and environmental remediation, and provide cost‐effective, efficient
