Non‐linear fracture mechanics and finite elements

Engineering Computations, 1987
A review is made of methods for calculating parameters characterizing crack tip behaviour in non‐linear materials. Convenient methods of calculating J‐integral type quantities are reviewed, classified broadly into two groups, as domain integrals and virtual crack extension techniques.

Self-adaptive finite elements in fracture mechanics

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 1978
Abstract A new finite element capability which permits the analyst to vary the order of polynomial approximation over each finite element is discussed with reference to its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations in linear elastic fracture mechanics.

p‐convergent finite element approximations in fracture mechanics

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1978
AbstractThe strain energy release rate (G) converges rapidly in finite element approximations in which the finite element mesh is fixed and the order of polynomial displacement interpolations (p) is increased. Numerical experiments indicate that the error inG is very closely estimated, even for small pand very coarse finite element meshes, by an ...

Finite fracture mechanics analysis using the scaled boundary finite element method

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2015
Abstract The polygon-based scaled boundary finite element method is applied to two finite fracture mechanics based failure criteria to predict the crack initiation from stress concentrations, i.e. notches and holes. The stress and displacement fields are modelled by the scaled boundary finite element method through semi-analytical expressions that ...

Quality assurance for fracture mechanical finite element analyses

Computers & Structures, 1991
A program system for automated fracture mechanical analyses with three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models has been developed. The main application has been safety analyses of pressurized components of nuclear power stations such as pipes and pipe bends containing surface cracks.

Mechanics of oblique fracture fixation using a finite-element model

Journal of Biomechanics, 1977
Abstract An investigation of the mechanics of a compression-plated oblique fracture using a finite-element stress analysis model is described. Three aspects of compression plating are considered: the effect of tension in the plate on stresses at the fracture site, the effects of placing bone screws across the fracture surface at different angles to ...

Finite-difference approximation of energies in fracture mechanics

2000
This paper provides a variational approximation by finite difference energies of functionals related to variational models in fracture mechanics for linearly--elastic materials in then framework of the Griffith theory of brittle fracture. The weak formulation of such a problem leads to functionals of the type \[ \mu\int_\Omega|{\mathcal E}u(x)|^2 dx ...

Probabilistic Fracture Mechanics Using Fractal Finite Element Method

Volume 5: High Pressure Technology; Nondestructive Evaluation Division; Student Paper Competition, 2008
This paper presents probabilistic fracture-mechanics analysis of linear-elastic cracked structures subjected to mixed-mode (modes I and II) loading conditions using fractal finite element method (FFEM). The method involves FFEM for calculating fracture response characteristics; statistical models of uncertainties in load, material properties, and crack
