Where were all the trees? Computer vision meets landscape history to unlock the potential of historical Ordnance Survey maps

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract The first edition of the Ordnance Survey's 1:2500 County Series is marked with treed areas, such as woodlands and orchards, and, remarkably, freestanding trees. Consequently, it is an unparalleled source of information on the distribution of trees across Britain in the mid‐late nineteenth century, when the maps were first surveyed. In order to

FIR H∞ Equalization

open access: yes, 2001
We approach "nite impulse response (FIR) equalization problem from an H# perspective. First, we formulate the calculation of the optimal H# performance for a given equalization setting as a semide"nite programming (SDP) problem.

Close‐to‐nature management regulates ecosystem carbon storage through its effects on vegetation community structure in Pinus massoniana plantations

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Forest plantations play an increasingly important role in climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration, yet management strategies that enhance long‐term ecosystem carbon storage remain insufficiently understood. We investigated the effects of more than a decade of close‐to‐nature management on community structure and ecosystem carbon storage ...

Using Airborne Laser Scanning and Sentinel‐2 to Understand Subcanopy Light Regimes and Understory Diversity of Vascular Plants in Temperate Mountain Forests

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that not just Airborne Laser Scanning, but also Sentinel‐2 can effectively estimate absolute canopy cover and canopy cover heterogeneity ‐ structural metrics that determine the subcanopy light regime, found to be linked to the vascular plant species richness in the understory of temperate mountain forests.

Recycling of Mill Scale Into High‐Purity Iron Through Hydrogen‐Based Reduction

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Mill scale, an iron oxide–rich steel by‐product, is difficult to recycle due to impurities. This study evaluates hydrogen‐based direct reduction and hydrogen plasma smelting reduction as low‐carbon recycling routes. Impurity segregation limits reduction kinetics. Direct reduction achieves 92% conversion in 180 min, while plasma reduction reaches 91% in

Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Glued Cross-Laminated Timber Beams Produced with Different Wood Species and Glues

open access: yesBioResources
Five-layer cross-laminated timber (CLT) beams made from 17-mm thick lumber pieces were produced using wood from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Uludağ fir (Abies bornmüelleriana Mattf.), and oak (Quercus petraea L.). The outer layers consisted of Scots

Incremental upper bound modeling of concrete failures in timber‐concrete notched connections

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract This paper introduces a novel theoretical framework for developing incremental upper bound solutions, which is applied to predict the response of two local concrete failures in timber‐concrete composite (TCC) decks with notched connections. The new approach enables a prediction of the capacity at the onset of failure as well as the entire post‐
