Microglial HVCN1 Deficiency Improves Movement and Survival of SOD1G93A ALS Mice by Enhancing Microglial Migration and Neuroprotection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Hydrogen voltage gated channel 1 (HVCN1) is upregulated in microglia of both ALS patients and its mouse model. HVCN1 deficiency enhances microglial migration via suppressing Akt signaling, promotes neurotrophic capacity and motor function, and prolongs survival of the SOD1G93A ALS mice. This study identifies HVCN1 as a novel, promising druggable target

Ducks and passerines nesting in northern mixed‐grass prairie treated with fire

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2011
Prescribed fire is an important, ecology‐driven tool for restoration of grassland systems. However, prescribed fire remains controversial for some grassland managers because of reported reductions in bird use of recently burned grasslands.

The Effects of Vegetative Type, Edges, Fire History, Rainfall and Management in Fire-Maintained Habitat [PDF]

open access: yes
The combined effects of fire history, climate, and landscape features (e.g., edges) on habitat specialists need greater focus in fire ecology studies, which usually only emphasize characteristics of the most recent fire.

Tropical montane cloud forest [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) are covered in clouds and fog, by definition, and are abundant with mosses, lichens and epiphytes. The hydrology of these ecosystems is poorly understood due to the extreme wetness, complex topography, and ...

Navigating the Ethereal Tightrope: The Nanogenerator Manipulates Neurons for Immune Equilibrium

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This review explores how nanogenerators modulate neuroimmune responses, offering innovative strategies for treating neurological disorders. By interfacing with neural pathways, they enable precise control of immune activity, especially via vagus nerve stimulation.

PEDOT:PSS—A Key Material for Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
PEDOT:PSS ‐ Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate ‐ is typically processed from water dispersions to form multifunctional and multidimensional constructs with tunable electronic and ionic conductivity. Throught processing engineering, PEDOT:PSS is intergrated in bioelectronic devices that operate efficiently in physiological conditions

Forest fires: Evaluation of government intervention measures [PDF]

open access: yes
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between government measures, volunteer participation, climate variables and forest fires. A number of studies have related forest fires to causes of ignition, to fire history in one area, to the type ...

Behavior‐ and Cell Type‐Specific Cortico‐Striatal Decoupling in a Parkinson's Disease‐Like Mouse Model

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Utilizing dual‐site fiber photometry, this study examines cortico‐striatal coupling with cell type resolution, identifying behavior‐ and cell type‐specific cortico striatal decoupling and its dopamine‐dependent mechanism in a Parkinson's disease mouse model.

In Search of the Elusive: Traditional Native Prescribed Burning in the Northeastern Wood Buffalo National Park Area [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
This project was designed to explore the traditional use of a prescribed burning technique by native people in the Ft. Smith - Ft. Fitzgerald area. Previous research in northwestern Alberta had demonstrated that resident Beaver, Slave and Cree peoples ...
