Exploring the occurrence of mega-fires in Portugal

Forest Ecology and Management, 2013
Abstract In the last few years, in several parts of the world, under extreme weather conditions, several catastrophic fires have taken place. These fires are called mega-fires. They are not just large fires but extreme events in their behavior, difficulty to control and impacts.

A lightning fire occurrence model for Ontario

Canadian Journal of Forest Research, 2005
Lightning strike, fire weather, and fire occurrence data were used to model (i) the probability that a lightning strike causes a sustainable ignition on the forest floor and (ii) the probability of an ignition being detected and reported to the fire management agency for each ecoregion in the province of Ontario.

Influence of short-interval fire occurrence on post-fire recovery of fire-prone shrublands in California, USA

International Journal of Wildland Fire, 2012
In recent decades, fire frequency has increased with population growth at the wildland–urban interface in southern California, USA. Short intervals (<5 years) between successive fires can be detrimental to plant species that require longer intervals between fires to reach reproductive maturity.

Global distribution, trends and types of active fire occurrences

Science of The Total Environment, 2023
Fire occurrence is synonymous to terrestrial ecosystems and an important component of the Earth system. Climate change, vegetation characteristics, and human activity regulate fire occurrence and spread, however, fires also interact with them in multiple ways.

Stochastic Representation of Fire Occurrence in a Wildland Fire Protection Planning Model for California

Forest Science, 1988
Abstract A fire occurrence module was developed for CFES-IAM Version 2, a stochastic simulation model of initial attack on wildfires in California. The module is designed to generate annual sequences of fire start times that are consistent with local fire history.

THE OCCURRENCE AND CONTROL OF FIRE BLIGHT IN CROATIA

Acta Horticulturae, 1999
Fire Blight was not observed in Croatia until 1995 when the first symptoms were reported in villages bordering upon Yugoslavia. Today it has spread to the eastern part of Croatia (see distribution map) while it has not yet been observed in western parts nor in the coastal region. Following its appearance all quarantine measures were undertaken.

Human Factors of Fire Occurrence in the Mediterranean

2009
The Mediterranean region accounts the larger proportion of human caused fires in the world (95%) followed by South Asia (90%), South America (85%) and Northeast Asia (80%) (FAO 2007). Socio-economic changes which are occurring in Europe along with global warming result in an augment of fire risk.

Estimations of the probability of fire occurrences in buildings

Fire Safety Journal, 2005
Fire occurrences in a particular building are really rare events. It is assumed that fires occur in accordance with the Poisson process and the number of fire occurrences in time interval can be modeled by a Poisson distribution. Using data such as the numbers of annual fire occurrences and building floor area the probability of fire occurrence in ...

The role of weather, past fire and topography in crown fire occurrence in eastern Australia

International Journal of Wildland Fire, 2016
We analysed the influence of weather, time since fire (TSF) and topography on the occurrence of crown fire, as mapped from satellite imagery, in 23 of the largest wildfires in dry sclerophyll forests in eastern Australia from 2002 to 2013. Fires were analysed both individually and as groups.

Occurrences of lightning fires — Can they be simulated?

Fire Technology, 1976
A computer simulation model of lightning fire discoveries has been developed by analyzing historical records of lightning fire occurrences. The model is being tested by using reports of lightning fires from four national forests. Results suggest that statistical distributions can be used to model the characteristics of lightning fire discoveries ...
