Fire-regime variability impacts forest carbon dynamics for centuries to millennia [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2017
Wildfire is a dominant disturbance agent in forest ecosystems, shaping important biogeochemical processes including net carbon (C) balance. Long-term monitoring and chronosequence studies highlight a resilience of biogeochemical properties to large ...

Loss of SHP1 in Spinal Astrocytes Triggers T‐Lymphocyte Infiltration and Nociceptive Hypersensitivity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Astrocyte‐specific SHP1 deletion disrupts astrocyte–vascular interactions and compromises BBB integrity while enhancing STAT1‐dependent CXCL10 expression. These changes synergistically promote peripheral CD4+ and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration into the SDH. The infiltrating T cells secrete IFN‐γ, which in turn activates microglia.

Neuromorphic Optical Tracking and Imaging of Randomly Moving Targets Through Dynamic Dense Scattering Media

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Vision begins not with images but with change: the retina fires only when something moves, handing the brain a stream of spikes. A neuromorphic imaging system adopts the same strategy—an event sensor that sees like the retina, a spiking network that thinks like the brain—to track and reconstruct fully randomly moving targets through tissue (phantom ...

Ecosystem resilience is evident 17 years after fire in Wyoming big sagebrush ecosystems

open access: yesEcosphere, 2016
Recent policy has focused on prevention of wildfire in the sagebrush steppe in an effort to protect habitat for the greater sage grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus).

Fire, fuel composition and resilience threshold in subalpine ecosystem. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BACKGROUND: Forecasting the effects of global changes on high altitude ecosystems requires an understanding of the long-term relationships between biota and forcing factors to identify resilience thresholds.

Long-term forest understory recovery and tradeoffs in response to prescribed fire return interval

open access: yesFire Ecology
Abstract Background Prescribed fire is a critical tool for managers of dry fire-prone forests used to create more fire resilient forests, improve wildlife habitat and increase understory diversity.
