Ant Diversity of the Xisha Islands: Community Structure, Exotic Species Colonization, and Ecological Functions in a Tropical Coral Archipelago

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
The first inventory of ants from the Xisha Islands of the South China Sea was compiled, revealing 21 species: 70% native and 30% exotic. Anthropogenic disturbance primarily drove exotic colonization, whereas island area showed weak positive effects on species richness. Most ants were omnivorous, with key mutualistic and seed‐dispersal roles.

Season of prescribed fire determines grassland restoration outcomes after fire exclusion and overgrazing

open access: yesEcosphere, 2021
Fire exclusion and mismanaged grazing are globally important drivers of environmental change in mesic C4 grasslands and savannas. Although interest is growing in prescribed fire for grassland restoration, we have little long‐term experimental evidence of

Mechanisms of Fire Seasonality Effects on Plant Populations

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2019
Altered fire regimes resulting from climate change and human activity threaten many terrestrial ecosystems. However, we lack a holistic and detailed understanding of the effects of altering one key fire regime component - season of fire. Altered fire seasonality can strongly affect post-fire recovery of plant populations through interactions with plant

What drives animal responses to high severity fire? The role of functional traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fire regimes are changing worldwide, with increases in the frequency, extent, and severity of fires posing growing risks to biodiversity. Fire severity – the degree of habitat alteration following fire – strongly influences both immediate survival and long‐term recovery of fauna.

Satellite-based assessment of climate controls on US burned area [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2013
Climate regulates fire activity through the buildup and drying of fuels and the conditions for fire ignition and spread. Understanding the dynamics of contemporary climate–fire relationships at national and sub-national scales is critical to assess the ...

Carrion ecology: concepts, interdisciplinary synthesis, and perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Carrion is a ubiquitous resource in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, yet it has long been overlooked in ecological research. Over the past two decades, studies on carrion and the many organisms that exploit it have flourished, revealing not only wide‐ranging ecological functions but also significance far beyond ecology.

Fire Regimes and Their Drivers in the Upper Guinean Region of West Africa

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
The Upper Guinean region of West Africa exhibits strong geographic variation in land use, climate, vegetation, and human population and has experienced phenomenal biophysical and socio-economic changes in recent decades.
