Voices From the Coast: Stakeholder Participation and Perception on Creating a Marine Protected Area

open access: yesBusiness Strategy and the Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explores participatory processes in the context of marine conservation, with a specific focus on recent initiatives undertaken by the Apulia region in Italy to establish a new Marine Protected Area (MPA). Employing a qualitative cross‐sectional methodology, the study investigates how local communities perceive and engage with the ...

The Many Elements of Traditional Fire Knowledge: Synthesis, Classification, and Aids to Cross-cultural Problem Solving in Fire-dependent Systems Around the World

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2013
I examined the hypothesis that traditional social-ecological fire systems around the world include common elements of traditional fire knowledge (TFK). I defined TFK as fire-related knowledge, beliefs, and practices that have been developed and applied ...

The Influence of Incongruent Line Extensions on Choice of a Brand's Pre‐Existing Products: The Mediating Role of Curiosity

open access: yesJournal of Consumer Behaviour, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Many brands have added highly incongruent products to their product lines, such as Lay's Chicken and Waffles Potato Chips, Blueberry Cheerios, and Carrot Cake Oreos. This paper investigates how highly incongruent products influence the choice of pre‐existing items in the product line.

Applications of Biomaterials in Separators for Secondary Batteries

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
In this review, biomaterial‐based separators are reviewed as sustainable alternatives to conventional polyolefin‐based separators. For 12 different natural polymers, spanning from Protista, Plantae, and Animalia, viable strategies for synthesizing biomass‐based separators are described.

Length of the fire season in a changing climate

open access: yesThe Forestry Chronicle, 1993
The Canadian Climate Centre's General Circulation Model provides two 10-year data sets of simulated daily weather for a large array of gridpoints across North America. A subset of this data, comprised of only those points within the forested part of Canada, was selected for study.

Selective Non‐Catalytic Reduction of NOx in the Exhaust Gas of Small Wood Gasification Boilers

open access: yesChemie Ingenieur Technik, EarlyView.
Kinetic studies of the SNCR reaction were conducted to investigate NOx reduction in the exhaust gas of small‐scale wood gasification boilers. Both the experimental results and the derived global kinetic model indicate that SNCR can achieve a significant reduction in NOx emissions under typical operating conditions. ABSTRACT The gas‐phase reaction of NO

Early-dry Season Prescribed Burns Used for Fire Management Maintain Woody Vegetation Structure in Cerrado Open Savannas

open access: yesBiodiversidade Brasileira, 2019
Cerrado vegetation has evolved with fire for millions of years. This disturbance is one of the main factors determining vegetation structure in the biome, as it favors open physiognomies such as savannas and grasslands.

Performance of Fire Risk Estimates Based on Soil Moisture of Selected Peat Land Use

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2018
Each peat land used has a different vegetation that will influences peat soil moisture during dry seasons. The level of fire risk depends on peat soil moisture in every land used.

Experimental methods in chemical engineering: The scientific method versus engineering design methodology

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract Engineering graduate students confuse the scientific method and problem solving when presenting their pre‐doctoral exams and theses: Science discourse adopts question and hypotheses to assert and establish a study's rationale, while it is problem and objectives in engineering design.
