Seasonal distribution of African savanna fires [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 1992
Savannas consist of a continuous layer of grass interspersed with scattered trees or shrubs, and cover approx. 10 million square kilometers of tropical Africa. African savanna fires, almost all resulting from human activities, may produce as much as a third of the total global emissions from biomass burning.

Fire, environmental and anthropogenic controls on pantropical tree cover

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Explaining tropical tree cover distribution in areas of intermediate rainfall is challenging, with fire’s role in limiting tree cover particularly controversial. We use a novel Bayesian approach to provide observational constraints on the strength of the

Three‐dimensional digital analysis of musteloid masticatory muscle architecture

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Musteloids span an enormous breadth of dietary modes within a single superfamily. In this study, we utilize digital dissection techniques to reconstruct the internal 3D anatomy of muscles within the musteloid feeding apparatus, and explore how dietary specializations might alter the size, orientation, and curvature of fascicles therein.
