Ant Diversity of the Xisha Islands: Community Structure, Exotic Species Colonization, and Ecological Functions in a Tropical Coral Archipelago

open access: yesBiological Diversity, EarlyView.
The first inventory of ants from the Xisha Islands of the South China Sea was compiled, revealing 21 species: 70% native and 30% exotic. Anthropogenic disturbance primarily drove exotic colonization, whereas island area showed weak positive effects on species richness. Most ants were omnivorous, with key mutualistic and seed‐dispersal roles.

Vegetation responses to season of fire in an aseasonal, fire-prone fynbos shrubland

open access: yesPeerJ, 2017
Season of fire has marked effects on floristic composition in fire-prone Mediterranean-climate shrublands. In these winter-rainfall systems, summer-autumn fires lead to optimal recruitment of overstorey proteoid shrubs (non-sprouting, slow-maturing, serotinous Proteaceae) which are important to the conservation of floral diversity.

Fire seasonality identification with multimodality tests [PDF]

open access: yesThe Annals of Applied Statistics, 2019
Understanding the role of vegetation fires in the Earth system has become an important environmental problem. Although fires time occurrence is mainly influenced by climate, human activity related with land use and management has altered fire patterns in several regions of the world.

What drives animal responses to high severity fire? The role of functional traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Fire regimes are changing worldwide, with increases in the frequency, extent, and severity of fires posing growing risks to biodiversity. Fire severity – the degree of habitat alteration following fire – strongly influences both immediate survival and long‐term recovery of fauna.

Global seasonal prediction of fire danger

open access: yesScientific Data
AbstractThe European Centre for Medium range weather forecast (ECMWF) on behalf of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) has recently widened the fire danger data offering in the Climate Data Store (CDS) to include a set of fire danger forecasts with lead times up to 7 months.

Carrion ecology: concepts, interdisciplinary synthesis, and perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Carrion is a ubiquitous resource in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, yet it has long been overlooked in ecological research. Over the past two decades, studies on carrion and the many organisms that exploit it have flourished, revealing not only wide‐ranging ecological functions but also significance far beyond ecology.

Evaluating Fire Indices for Fire Ignition and Spread Rate in the Western United States

open access: yesEarth's Future
Wildfires are complex events that are challenging to model. Researchers and land managers often rely on fire indices as a proxy of fire risk in operational forecasts and future projections.
