Smart Nanotechnologies for Multimodal Neuromodulation and Brain Interfacing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Recent advances in smart nanotechnologies are expanding the toolbox for brain interfacing, from wireless neuromodulation and high‐resolution sensing to targeted delivery within the central nervous system. By combining responsive nanomaterials with bioinspired design, these platforms enable multimodal interactions with neurons and glia, while also ...

The species diversity × fire severity relationship is hump‐shaped in semiarid yellow pine and mixed conifer forests

open access: yesEcosphere, 2019
The combination of direct human influences and the effects of climate change are resulting in altered ecological disturbance regimes, and this is especially the case for wildfires.

Magnetoelectric Nanoparticle‐Based Wireless Brain–Computer Interface: Underlying Physics and Projected Technology Pathway

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENPs) enable fully wireless, minutely invasive neuromodulation, and potentially neural recording, by converting magnetic into electric and, conversely, electric into magnetic fields, respectively, at high spatiotemporal resolution.

Effects of post-fire logging on forest surface air temperatures in the Siskiyou Mountains, Oregon, USA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Following stand-replacing wildfire, post-fire (salvage) logging of fire-killed trees is a widely implemented management practice in many forest types. A common hypothesis is that removal of fire-killed trees increases surface temperatures due to loss of ...

Advances and Perspectives in Graphene‐Based Quantum Dots Enabled Neuromorphic Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Graphene‐based QDs are zero‐dimensional carbon nanomaterials with pronounced quantum confinement and tunable electronic structures. Herein, we summarize their synthesis strategies and functionalization methods, and highlight their functional roles and operating mechanisms in devices, as well as recent advances in neuromorphic electronics. We anticipate

Few large or many small fires: Using spatial scaling of severe fire to quantify effects of fire‐size distribution shifts

open access: yesEcosphere
As wildfire activity increases and fire‐size distributions potentially shift in many forested regions worldwide, anticipating the spatial patterns of burn severity expected with future fire activity is critical for ecological understanding and informing ...

Remote Magnetomechanical Neuromodulation Uncovers Therapeutic Mechanisms for Alleviating Parkinsonian Symptoms in Freely Moving Mice

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Magnetomechanical neuromodulation using magnetic nanodiscs enables remote activation of neurons. In a hemiparkinsonian mouse model, alternating magnetic fields actuate the nanodiscs to generate torque that opens mechanosensitive ion channels within the subthalamic nucleus, thereby modulating basal ganglia motor circuitry.

Postfire reproduction of a serotinous conifer, the giant sequoia, in the Nelder Grove, California

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
The giant sequoia, a serotinous conifer naturally occurring in mixed‐conifer forests of the southern and central Sierra Nevada, California, USA, is the world's largest tree species.

Fire Severity Mapping System for Australia

open access: yesBiodiversidade Brasileira, 2019
"Savanna Burning" methodologies to calculate greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) are applied across the tropical savannas and rangelands of north Australia. The program generates tens of millions of dollars annually by promoting improved fire management regimes with positive social and ecological outcomes. The current methodologies utilise the seasonality
