Neuromorphic Near‐Sensor and In‐Sensor Computing Enabled by Next‐Generation Material‐Based Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This Review presents a structural framework that classifies neuromorphic sensing into near‐sensor and in‐sensor architectures, clarifying physical coupling between sensing and computation. The framework connects neural and synaptic device functions with recent advances in optical, mechanical, and chemical sensing, compares energy consumption and ...

Fire severity influences the response of soil microbes to a boreal forest fire

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2016
Wildfire activity is projected to increase in boreal forests as a result of climate warming. The consequences of increased wildfire activity for soil carbon (C) storage in boreal forests may depend on the sensitivity of soil microbes to fire severity ...

Femtosecond‐Laser Nanocavitation Regenerates SERS‐Active Plasmonic Nanogaps for Longitudinal Molecular Sensing at Biointerfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A regenerative molecular sensing platform that co‐localizes surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing and nanocavitation‐based actuation. Femtosecond‐laser triggered nanocavitation produces thermomechanical forces to locally regenerate SERS‐active nanogaps in protein‐rich biofluids while preserving optical performance.

Gene Correction Enhances Dopaminergic Cell Therapy in a Nonhuman Primate Model of Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
LRRK2‐mutant induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were derived from a patient with Parkinson's disease (PD). Using CRISPR/Cas9–mediated gene editing, the pathogenic LRRK2 mutations were precisely corrected, and isogenic dopaminergic neural progenitor cells (DA‐NPCs) were subsequently generated.

Relationship of satellite-derived fire severity to archaeological fire severity and fire effects in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico, USA

open access: yesFire Ecology
Abstract Background Archaeological attributes important for determining cultural affiliation, site age, or artifact origin can be damaged or destroyed by wildfires. Satellite-derived fire severity products are used in post-fire rapid response to prioritize and guide stabilization and ...

Discovering Early‐Stage Gas Generation Kinetics Enables Thermal Runaway Early Warning in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Operando gas diagnostics reveal a previously unrecognized chemical activation (CA) stage during thermal runaway in lithium‐ion batteries. A physics‐informed gas generation kinetics network (GGKNet) is developed to reconstruct reaction pathways and physical models automatically.

Assessment of the Analytic Burned Area Index for Forest Fire Severity Detection Using Sentinel and Landsat Data

open access: yesFire
The quantitative assessment of forest fire severity is significant for understanding the changes in ecological processes caused by fire disturbances. As a novel spectral index derived from the multi-objective optimization algorithm, the Analytic Burned ...

RPLP2 Mediates the Beneficial Effects of Exercise on Stress Resistance Through Muscle–Brain Communication

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A novel exercise‐inducible myokine acidic ribosomal protein P2 (RPLP2), initially identified from human trials, is presented here, whose circulating levels negatively correlate with clinical anxiety severity. Muscle‐derived RPLP2 enhances hippocampal ribosomal assembly and adult neurogenesis to rescue stress‐induced anxiety deficits.
