Baby steps: investigating the development of perceptual-motor couplings in infancy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
There are cells in our motor cortex that fire both when we perform and when we observe similar actions. It has been suggested that these perceptual-motor couplings in the brain develop through associative learning during correlated sensorimotor ...

Self‐Powered Flexible Triboelectric‐Gated Ion‐Gel Transistor for Neuromorphic Tactile Sensing and Human Activity Recognition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A fully flexible ion‐gel‐gated graphene‐channel transistor driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator enables self‐powered tactile sensing and synaptic learning. Mimicking spike‐rate‐dependent plasticity, the device exhibits frequency‐selective potentiation and depression, supporting rate‐coded neuromorphic computation even under flex.

Impacts of land use, restoration, and climate change on tropical peat carbon stocks in the 21st century: Implications for climate mitigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The climate mitigation potential of tropical peatlands has gained increased attention as Southeast Asian peatlands are being deforested, drained and burned at very high rates, causing globally significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the atmosphere.

Impacts of different forest fire management policies and fuel treatment models on forest fire risk in boreal forest of China

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Forest fuels are the material basis of forest fires and the main factor in the spread of fires. The current global warming has led to an increase in the effective fuel load in the global boreal forests, and the long-term implementation of the fire ...

U.S. federal fire and forest policy: emphasizing resilience in dry forests

open access: yesEcosphere, 2016
Current U.S. forest fire policy emphasizes short‐term outcomes versus long‐term goals. This perspective drives managers to focus on the protection of high‐valued resources, whether ecosystem‐based or developed infrastructure, at the expense of forest ...
