Jet Fires: a “Minor” Fire Hazard?
Jet fires have received only a rather reduced attention as compared to other types of fires; this is probably due to the fact that they are usually much smaller that fireballs, pool fires or tank fires. However, jet fires often occur in areas where there

Pure and loaded fireballs in SGR giant flares
On December 27, 2004, a giant flare from SGR 1806$-$20 was detected on earth. Its thermal spectrum and temperature suggest that the flare resulted from an energy release of about $10^{47}$ erg/sec close to the surface of a neutron star in the form of ...

Rise of the south: How Arab‐led maritime trade transformed China, 671–1371 CE
Abstract China's center of socioeconomic activities was in the North prior to the Tang dynasty but is in the South today. We demonstrate that Arab and Persian Muslim traders triggered that transition when they came to China in the late seventh century, by lifting maritime trade along the South Coast and re‐creating the South.

Writing about a Prime Minister: Reflections on How Malcolm Fraser PM Happened
In 1989 I published Malcolm Fraser PM, a study of the way that prime minister Fraser worked. In this note I muse about the back story, about the processes involved in writing a study of a recently defeated prime minister, explaining how the book was written and what could be learnt from the interactions with Fraser.

Measurements of fireball onset
Laser-based measurements of the characteristic features of fireball onset and stabilization in response to a stepped voltage applied to an anode immersed in a low pressure (100 mTorr) helium afterglow are reported. These include spatial and temporal evolution of metastable species, electron density, and electric field magnitude as measured by planar ...

ABSTRACT This paper explores the limits of mission‐directed entrepreneurial states by drawing on the theory of recombinant innovation and F.A. Hayek's insights on the spontaneous growth of knowledge in society. First, the use of discretionary policymaking curtails the range of knowledge generated in the process of social interaction, limiting the scope
