Benchmarking gut microbiome indices within and across populations

open access: yesiMetaOmics, EarlyView.
We compared 10 widely used gut microbiome indices in 12,561 American Gut Project participants and 10 external cohorts, testing how well each distinguished people with healthy lifestyles, responded to 79 environmental factors, and associated with 14 chronic conditions. No single index performed best on all three tasks.

Do Gut Microbiomes Shift After Bariatric Surgery? A Literature Review

open access: yesMedicina
The human gastrointestinal tract is estimated to be populated by 38 trillion bacteria from almost 1000 different species. The dominant phyla are Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria.

Human biomarker navigator

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
The Human Biomarker Navigator integrates the disease continuum, biomarker dynamics, cross‐organ biomarker networks, biomarker classification, and technology‐driven paradigms. It maps how biomarkers link multi‐system physiology and pathology across the nervous, respiratory, endocrine, circulatory, immune, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and ...

Predicted Functional Potentials of Bacterial Communities in Fermented Maize Products From Ghana, Nigeria, and Benin via 16S rRNA Amplicon Sequencing and PICRUSt2

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen
Fermented maize products are integral to the diets of many African communities. Despite their cultural significance and health benefits, little is known about the metabolic potential of their microbial populations.

Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio.

open access: yes, 2015
Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio in the colon contents (lumen) was significantly higher (ANOVA p = 0.0021, post-tests both ...

Gut Enterococcus faecium derived leucic acid mediates the antiobesity effect of dietary fiber

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
This study identified Enterococcus faecium as a gut bacterium with anti‐obesity activity, which alleviated adipocyte hypertrophy, dyslipidemia, and hepatic steatosis by converting leucine into leucic acid (LEA) to regulate mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation.

Correlation between milk-fat yield and Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio.

open access: yes, 2014
Scatter plot showing the amount of fat produced per day for each cow (X-axis), vs. the Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio. Each point represents one individual cow. R2 of the linear regression is shown in the upper right corner of the plot.

Different gut microbiome dysbioses impact the evolutionary fate of hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yesiMeta, EarlyView.
Transient exposure to ampicillin results in restructuring of microbiota to favor oxygen‐tolerant bacteria, whereas osmotic laxative perturbation preserves Bacteriodota. Ampicillin‐ but not laxative‐exposed environment favors establishment of rmpA phase variants that lost hypermucoviscosity but short‐chain fatty acids present in the laxative‐exposed gut

High‐Sugar Diet and Intestinal Diseases: A Shared Microbiota–Barrier–Immunity–Metabolism Axis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Food Allergy, and Colorectal Cancer

open access: yesiNew Medicine, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global incidence of intestinal diseases—including food allergy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and colorectal cancer (CRC)—continues to escalate in parallel with the expansion of the “Western diet,” within which the high‐sugar diet (HSD) has emerged as a pivotal yet under‐recognized dietary driver.
