Morphology of the First Instar of the House Fly Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae)

Control of melanization in first instar larvae of Schistocerca gregaria

Melanization in first-instar larvae of Schistocerca is controlled by a hormone released from neurosecretory axon terminals of the fine nerves posterior to the metathoracic ganglion. The hormone is not detectable in the haemolymph before the embryonic ecdysis but is present within seconds after the ecdysis has started.

Dispersal of first-instar gypsy moth larvae in relation to population quality

Field studies of dispersal by first instar gypsy moth larvae indicate that almost all larvae undergo an initial dispersal episode. However, in laboratory studies large larvae (from large eggs) disperse more frequently than small larvae (from small eggs) in the presence of favored food. Large larvae may be better adapted for dispersal.

Intraspecific competition among first instars of the parasitic wasp Biosteres longicaudatus

Females of the solitary endoparasitic wasp Biosteres longicaudatus sometimes deposit >1 egg (superparasitism) in each larva of the Caribbean fruit fly host, Anastrepha suspensa. As host density increases, there is an inverse relationship between the level of superparasitism and the number of progeny produced/female.

AbstractThe morphology of the first instar larva of the miltogrammine flesh fly Apodacra pulchra Egger, 1861 is described using SEM and light microscopy. The larva is shown to possess a strongly modified pseudocephalon with comb-like lateral processes, a large ventral organ, and a transversely enlarged, slit-like (or ⊥-shaped) functional mouth opening.
