The standard cosmological model predicts that the first cosmological objects are formed when the age of the universe is a few hundred million years. Recent theoretical studies and numerical simulations consistently suggest that the first objects are very massive primordial stars.

The First Stars

In this review, we outline the current theory for the formation of stars in present-day molecular clouds and then extrapolate this paradigm to earlier generations of stars. We discuss the radiative signature of star formation, gravitational instabilities in circumstellar disks, and the current status of the initial mass function.

Pygmy Stars: First Pair

The binary LP 101-15/16 having the proper motion of 1.62 seconds of arc per year has been studied with the prime-focus spectrograph of the 200-inch (508 cm) telescope. Indications are that LP 101-15/16 is the first pair of pygmy stars ever discovered.

From the first stars to the first galaxies

Abstract We present the results from three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics calculations of the formation and evolution of H ii regions around the first stars. We carry out ray-tracing simulations of ionizing radiation transfer by embedding a population III star at the center of the primordial gas cloud formed in a small dark halo.
