Collective orientation of an immobile fish school, effect on rheotaxis [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. E 103, 022137 (2021), 2020
We study the orientational order of an immobile fish school. Starting from the second Newton's law, we show that the inertial dynamics of orientations is ruled by an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This process describes the dynamics of alignment between neighboring fish in a shoal, a dynamics already used in the literature for mobile fish schools. Firstly,

Acoustic density estimation of dense fish shoals [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Acoust. Soc. Am. 148 (2020), 2020
Multiple scattering of acoustic waves offers a noninvasive method for density estimation of a dense shoal of fish where traditional techniques such as echo-counting or echo-integration fail. Through acoustic experiments with a multi-beam sonar system in open sea cages, multiple scattering of sound in a fish shoal, and in particular the coherent ...

Underwater Fish Detection with Weak Multi-Domain Supervision [PDF]

open access: yes2019 International Joint Conference on Neural Networks (IJCNN), Budapest, Hungary, 2019, pp. 1-8, 2019
Given a sufficiently large training dataset, it is relatively easy to train a modern convolution neural network (CNN) as a required image classifier. However, for the task of fish classification and/or fish detection, if a CNN was trained to detect or classify particular fish species in particular background habitats, the same CNN exhibits much lower ...

Fish and Fishing in the Roman World [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Maritime Archaeology, 2018
This article focuses on two aspects related to fish and fishing. It first discusses the social context for the consumption of preserved and fresh fish, showing that generally consumption of certain types of fresh fish conferred status, whereas consumption of preserved fish, being more affordable, was attested across social strata.
