Valorization of the peel and husk of guaraná (Paullinia cupana): oil extraction, chemical composition, cytotoxicity, and antitumor potential

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, EarlyView.
Abstract Guaraná (Paullinia cupana) is a fruit native to the Amazon region. Due to its widespread use, primarily in beverages, its production has grown over the years. The seed is the only commercially valuable part of the fruit so the guaraná production chain generates byproducts, including peel, husk, and spent seed.

Psilocybin Production With Genetically Modified Aspergillus nidulans Under Pressurized Conditions

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
Shake flask cultures of psilocybin‐producing A. nidulans were investigated with respect to nitrogen source, rheology, power input, and oxygen availability, and subsequently scaled to a stirred tank reactor scale based on specific power input to develop and optimize a pressurized bioprocess.

Lab‐Scale Continuous Biomanufacturing: A Tool for Process Development With Adaptive Strategies for Capture and Virus Inactivation

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the continuous lab‐scale process. ABSTRACT Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are nowadays fundamental in treating a wide range of severe diseases, including cancer, infections, or autoimmune disorders. Due to their high specificity, potent activity, and fewer side effects compared to small molecular drugs, the market for mAbs is ...

Quantitative estimates of fish abundance from boat electrofishing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Multiple removals by boat electro-fishing were used to estimate fish populations in non-wadeable habitats in New Zealand lakes and rivers. Mean capture probability was 0.47±h0.10 (± 95% CI) from 35 population estimates made with 2-7 successive removals ...

Eudragit®‐engineered pH‐responsive probiotic microspheres with enhanced gastrointestinal resistance and prolonged storage stability for inflammatory bowel disease therapy

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
This study reports the development of AMS@Eud core‐shell microspheres, combining calcium alginate and pH‐responsive Eudragit® L100, which exhibit exceptional gastrointestinal resistance and long‐term storage stability (only 5.28%–9.09% viability loss over 35 days at 4–25°C), and effectively alleviate inflammatory bowel disease via gut microbiota ...

Effects of climate on size structure and functioning of aquatic food webs [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In aquatic food webs, the role of body size is notoriously strong. It is also well known that temperature has an effect on body size. For instance, Bergmann’s rule states that body size increases from warm to cold climates.

Continual decision‐making dynamics across biological organisms

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Decision‐making is a central function of adaptive behaviour in biological agents. However, strategies for adaptive decision‐making can vary substantially across species. Here, we aim to extend the comparative scope of decision‐making analyses to phylogenetically diverse organisms.
