Historical Fishing Communities
2016Community-building is one tool of human resilience to overcome the challenges of a hostile environment such as the marine. The chapter provides an overview of how the concept of community has been deployed in historical and social anthropology studies of maritime communities since the 1920s.

Abstract There is a remarkable benthic fish community in deep water in Lake Tanganyika that is rich in endemic species and genetically diverse. Its lower limit is determined by oxygen concentration, some species ranging down to about 200 m depth at the south of the lake where the oxygenated layer is deepest.
