Fluctuations in pelagic fish density linked to ambient conditions
Journal of Fish Biology, 2020AbstractAnimal behaviour has been broadly studied for its social or functional aspects but less often for understanding the interactions between organisms and their ambient conditions. A pilot observational study was performed by means of underwater camera to investigate the correlation between environmental factors and the density of fish in the ...

Variability of fish densities in a small catchment
Ecology of Freshwater Fish, 1998Abstract— Temporal and spatial variability of fish communities were examined within a 91‐km2 catchment in central New York over four years. Riffle‐dwelling species, slimy sculpin Cottus cognatus, longnose dace Rhinichthys cataractae, and young‐of‐the‐year brown trout Salmo trutta, were more strongly affected by flood and drought than pool‐adapted ...

Impact of fish density and effort level on catching efficiency of fishing gear
Fisheries Research, 1987Abstract The catching efficiency of a fishing gear is not constant. Particularly in the coastal fisheries with static gear, it is a negative function of local fish density and of effort level or gear density. This has an impact on the economics of fishing, as well as the validity of assessments based on commercial catch and effort data and the ...

Widespread heterogeneity in density-dependent mortality of nearshore fishes
Ecology LettersABSTRACT Debates over whether and how populations are regulated have recently shifted away from detecting and instead towards quantifying the strength of density dependence and its variation among systems. Yet, the degree of variation in density‐dependent mortality and the factors driving this variation remain poorly understood. Here,

Studies on High Density Lipoproteins in Fish Eye Disease
Acta Medica Scandinavica, 1983ABSTRACT Serum high density lipoproteins (HDL) were isolated by preparative ultracentrifugation from two patients with fish eye disease (FED). Compared to HDL from control subjects the HDL particles of FED were characterized by their abnormally small size and a relative enrichment with polar lipids.

Fish stocking density impacts tank hydrodynamics
Aquaculture, 2006The effect of stocking density upon the hydrodynamics of a circular tank, configured in a recirculation system, was investigated. Red drums Sciaenops ocellatus of approximately 140 g wet weight, were stocked at five rates varying from 0 to 12 kg m-3.

Consequences of fish stocking density in a recreational fishery
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2014Density-dependent processes resulting from fish stocking were demonstrated to have a significant impact on recreational fishery performance, and this case study will be of use to guide fish stocking decisions in other fisheries. We evaluated a put-grow-and-take lake fishery stocking program for Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) located in ...

Energy density of marine pelagic fish eggs
Journal of Fish Biology, 2002Analysis of the literature on pelagic fish eggs enabled generalizations to be made of their energy densities, because the property of being buoyant in sea water appears to constrain the proximate composition of the eggs and thus to minimize interspecific variation.

Density Dependent Growth and the Culling of Farmed Fish
Marine Resource Economics, 1995The aquaculture model of Arnason (1992) is extended to allow for density dependent growth. It is then shown that the optimal management policy for a fish farm may include a period in which there is culling of the stock up to a final slaughter date when all the remaining fish are slaughtered.
