Fish discarded from Scottish demersal vessels: Estimators of total discards and annual estimates for targeted gadoids [PDF]

open access: yesICES Journal of Marine Science, 1999
The main objective of discard sampling programmes is to estimate annual total discards of fish species whose stocks are routinely assessed from catch data. The Scottish discard programme is based on a stratified random design, and a ratio estimator is used to estimate total discards independently in each stratum.

Reconstructing discards profiles of unreported catches [PDF]

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2018
In Portugal it has been estimated that unreported catches represent one third of total catches. Herein, information on landings and total unreported catches (discards) by commercial métier were disaggregated into high taxonomic detail using published ...

Modeling Discards in Stock Assessments: Red Grouper Epinephelus morio in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico

open access: yesFishes, 2021
To be as accurate as possible, stock assessments should account for discard mortality in fisheries if it occurs. Three common approaches to modeling discards in assessments are to lump dead discards with landings, treat dead discards as their own fleet ...

Assessing the diet and trophic level of marine fauna in a fishing ground subject to discarding activity using stable isotopes

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2022
Discarding practices have become a source of concern for the perennation of marine resources, prompting efforts of discard reduction around the globe. However, little is known about the fate of discards in marine environments. Discarding may provide food

Species composition and assemblage analysis of fishes caught as bycatch by the Patagonian shrimp fishery in the southwest Atlantic [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2023
Bottom trawl fishing is the most used worldwide gear generating large amounts of discards due to bycatch of a variety of species. Shrimp fisheries are recognized for their high incidence in global discards.

Nutritional Profiling and the Value of Processing By-Products from Gilthead Sea Bream (Sparus aurata)

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2020
Fish processing industries generate a large volume of discards. In order to fulfil with the principles of a sustainable circular economy, it is necessary to maintain aquaculture by-products in the food chain through the production of high-value ...

Pre-Treatment of Fish By-Products to Optimize Feeding of Tenebrio molitor L. Larvae

open access: yesInsects, 2022
Fish discards are organic waste with high and good-quality protein levels, as well as a fatty acid profile rich in n−3 LCPUFAs, mainly eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. These discards can be used as food for Tenebrio molitor (Linnaeus, 1758)

Reconstruction of Syria’s fisheries catches from 1950–2010: Signs of overexploitation [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2015
Background. The global community infers trends in fisheries through the catch data assembled by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from its member countries. Thus, inferences depend on the quality of the member country data,

An evaluation of the deep-sea catch in the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt regarding pattern of CPUE, diversity, Sharks, and discards

open access: yesScientific African, 2022
Deep-sea fisheries suffer from the very low studies and attentions in the Egyptian water of the Mediterranean Sea in spite of its importance in the other parts of the Sea for the fisheries economy and biodiversity.

Diversity of Shallow-Water Species in Prawn Trawling: A Case Study of Malindi–Ungwana Bay, Kenya

open access: yesDiversity, 2022
Bottom trawling is a common fishing method that targets bottom-dwelling fisheries resources. It is non-selective and large amounts of by-catch are discarded, raising serious sustainability and ecosystem conservation concerns.
